The technology that drives 3D displays is as amazing as the display itself. Evolution of 3D Display As early as 1830s, the concept of what we know today as 3D display was hatched. Sir Charles Wheatstone proposed his theory which was revolutionary at the time, but he was clearly way ahead of everybody else and no one thought much about it until 1931 when Tru-Vue, a company based in Rock Island, Illinois though that it was a good idea to present images and films in 3D. Since then, the craze for better and powerful technology has been on the rise. The current state is so advanced that Sir Charles Wheatstone might not have imagined in his wildest dreams that the 3D display technology would come this far. Nevertheless, the science behind the technology has been through several ups and downs, weak ideas have been fallen away along the road while the good ones remained and become more refined. How 3D Display Portraits Images There are two different technologies that are used to produce 3D displays. One is the archetypal anaglyph which perhaps you recognize because of the red and cyan filters on the screen and the other more refined technology is polarization. Both are unique in their own ways. Anaglyph is the earlier of the two and has brought the whole 3D thing into the mainstream. What it essentially does is break down the image into the constituent channels Red, Green and Blue respectively and then the filter on each eye creates the illusion of 3 dimensions. Polarization on the other hand is closely similar. It plays with the planes which carry light waves. Each plane carries a different wavelength, which is tilted at an angle, each opposite for each eye and when those are received by the eyes, a perception of 3D is created. Although the technology seems to be cutting edge, it has not reached a level where people can expect a 3D display to be flawless. With every passing day, as technology matures, new things are being added everyday. Linear polarization, circular polarization and time multiplexing are certain concepts that are adding maturity 3D technology and in the very near future, we will have TVs that can emulate real life like never before.
