The FA Cup is the oldest association football competition in the world and an enormously important symbol of the History of Football in England. In 1872, Wanderers Football Club won the first title in the history of FA Cup football. The record for the most wins is held by Manchester United with 11 triumphs, followed by Arsenal with 10 and Tottenham Hotspur with 8. The FA Cup is held by Wigan Athletic, who defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the 2013 final. FA Cup Fotball in the 1910s Only six FA Cup Finals were played during the 1910s because of the First World War. Britain was part of the alliance Triple Entente (United Kingdom-Russia-France). Many players volunteered for service on the Western Front. Although the war had begun FA chose to play the tournament 1914/15. Many teams were hamstrung but the purpose was to preserve national morale. Six different teams each won the FA Cup in the 1910s. 1-0 was the score at four of the six finals. Newcastle United's center forward Albert Shepherd was the only player who scored more than one goal in an FA Cup Final in the 1910s. Club of the decade: Newcastle United Football Club was founded in 1892. Newcastle lost three finals in the 1900s. In the 1910 final they faced Barnsley who played in the Second Division. It was a great opportunity to get rid of the Crystal Palace ghost. Barnsley took the lead in the first half but Newcastle equalised late in the second half and the final was decided in the replay. Newcastle won the replay at Goodison Park thanks to two goals from Albert Shepherd. Newcastle played in the final the following year but once again they were unable to win at Crystal Palace. Player of the decade: As you already read Albert Shepherd scored both goals when Newcastle won 2-0 against Barnsley in the 1910 FA Cup Final. Shepherd was a great scorer. He played 123 games with Newcastle United, scoring 92 goals. Both the season 1909/10 (30) and 1910/11 (33), Shepherd scored 30 goals or more for Newcastle. He played two caps without scoring for England.
