The reason that my blog first introduced Knitting with Wool was because this was the first craft I had been taught by my Grandmother and Mother. It brought back many happy memories and a few laughs remembering the times we had while sitting together and chatting while knitting. Knitting is like all the other crafts, it is something you can do one your own or do in a group and meet some new friends and have some laughs along the way. Knitting is a subject that you will no doubt agree, is something for everyone. Starting with the young ones learning French Knitting, this is where we started. Only problem was we didn't have a Knitting Nancy so my Father made us one each by hammering in four small nails into the top of some empty wooden cotton reels. My brother, sister and I were given some yarn and off we went making our snakes, well at least that is what they started off being. Our family are quite competitive lot, so it soon turned into a competition to see who could make the longest. Luckily, our Grandmother and Mother were around to control the arguments and also there to sew together what we had done and turned them into throw over rugs and place mats. Graduating on from French Knitting our next project was knitting scarves. Our brother was a few years older than us so by the time scarf making came along our brother had found himself a girlfriend and wasn't interested any more, besides a guy doing knitting, how uncool, so it was up to my sister and I to keep learning more about knitting and it was a lot of fun. Once we mastered the art of scarf making and started wearing them, all our friends were putting in orders for us to make them one, in their favourite football colours. Jumpers, Sweaters and Cardigans were next on the agenda and over the time we made quite a few. Time moved on and as we got older our focus shifted to sport and we were also busy going out with our friends and knitting fell by the way side. Besides now it was much easier to go to the store and buy our garments instead of making them. Even our Grandmother and Mother slowed down making things because we didn't want to wear home-made garments, we wanted to buy them at the store like the rest of our friends. Like I mentioned in my blog Knitting with Wool is a dying art and I would hate to see it disappear and be forgotten. All of us who do know how to knit, should make a conscious effort to teach at least one person a year and keep the craft alive. Happy Knitting.
