The FA Cup is the oldest association football competition in the world. In 1872, Wanderers Football Club won the first title in the history of FA Cup football. The record for the most wins is held by Manchester United with 11 triumphs, followed by Arsenal with 10 and Tottenham Hotspur with 8. The FA Cup is held by Wigan Athletic, who defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the 2013 final. FA Cup Football in the 1920s During the Great War, Crystal Palace was used by the Army and was no longer available for FA Cup Finals. FA chose Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge to host the FA Cup Finals 1920-22. From the FA Cup Final 1923, finals were played at the prestigious Wembley Stadium. Wembley Stadium was built in 300 days and it was built to accommodate 127 000. Welsh side break England dominance In 1927, the trophy was taken out of England for the first time when Cardiff City defeated Arsenal 1–0 in the Final, Cardiff hero Hughie Ferguson scored the only goal of the match. Club of the decade: Bolton Wanderers Football Club was formed as Christ Church Football Club in 1874 and adopted its current name in 1877. Bolton Wanderers won the FA Cup three times in the 1920s (1923, 1926 and 1929). They did so without conceding any goals in any of the three finals. Player of the decade: David Jack was the first player ever in the history of football to score at Wembley. He scored Boltons first goal in the 2-0 victory against West Ham in the 1923 Final. Jack decided the 1926 final with the only goal in the game against Manchester City. He scored 144 goals in 295 appearances for Bolton Wanderers. Jack spent eight successful years with the Trotters. It is said that Arsenal’s representatives drank down Bolton’s representatives when Jack was signed by the London club 1928. David Jack played 208 games for the Gunners, scoring 124 times, and was part of three League Championship winning teams. Jack also scored three goals in nine caps for England.
