What exactly is Mesotherapy? The term originated from 2 Greek words, mesos and therapeia, which roughly correspond to “middle” and “to treat medically.” Dr Michel Pistor, from France, is credited to have devised this treatment, mainly to overcome extremely painful medical conditions. In fact, this path-breaking system he pioneered won him recognition, he was awarded Legion d’Honneur, (Legion of Honour) and hailed as a national hero. He used it for the first time to treat an asthamatic, but though there was no improvement in the patient’s condition, it led to a startling discovery – the patient was hearing impaired and his condition improved! The French physician then began to inject small doses of the same medicine, procaine, around the ear, and before lond had to deal with serpentine queues of hearing impaired people. Eczema of the auditory canal and similar conditions also showed significant improvement. But this was in the past. Has mesotherapy really been the manna from heaven like it is touted? Is it exaggerated or does it deserve its exalted status as an optimal form of drug delivery? It involves several cell-rupturing injections and is also a combination of administering natural extracts, homeopathic ingredients and vitamins, to the middle layer of the skin. As it directly attacks adipose or fat cells, this treatment is very popular in the use of facial rejuvenation. It is also particularly effective because it boosts collagen production. The result – less wrinkles and an attractive, youthful appearance. Not just the face, mesotherapy is also used to eliminate dreaded fat from other problem areas like buttocks and legs and wipe out the orange peel appearance so that an even skin tone can be achieved. For most patients, it’s the last resort after numerous punishing diets and exercise regimen have failed to show a noticeable result. Mesotherapy, hence is like godsend for those fighting a losing battle with stubborn pockets of fat, which meet their end, with this treatment. Mesotherapy has become the buzzword in cosmetic dermatology, thanks to its corresponding factors of convenience such as low dosage, no outpatient time, minimal after effects and pain and relatively less expensive on the pocket. As hospitalization is not required, many people are open to mesotherapy than going under the scalpel. While mesotherapy is an offshoot of pharmacotherapy, it can treat a hugely versatile gamut of medical conditions ranging from the basic general ones such as gout, dental procedures, headache, lower backache, sports injuries to veterinary conditions. In its current fat-melting avatar, it has become synonymous with body contouring and sculpting and an integral part of image overhauling which in turn is a vital axis of the beauty and cosmetic industry.
