Wilderness survival is an essential skill for any person in these hard times of economic hardships and natural disasters. I personally saw the aftermath of the May 20 2013 tornado in Moore Oklahoma. Speaking to some of the people who were in the actual tornado they were left without power for a little over 1 week. Just imagine if you had to live through a time of no power in your house for over 1 week. Would you make it? You wouldn't be able to use the microwave or the oven to cook, more than likely the water supply could be not flowing or could be contaminated. You would need to purify or decontaminate it, with no easy ability to boil it on the stove. When something like this happens this is not the time to learn survival skills such as fire making, water filtering or water purification. You can learn some of these skills now and know what to do in a situation like this and most importantly survive. If you are prepared for something like this you have a much greater chance of survival. Don't let this idea get you down. Just lift your chin up and press forward and learn some of these skills and get prepared. This doesn't have to be a painful process it can be fun and challenging at the same time. I enjoy trying out new fire making skills every time I camp. I have used a metal match or a magnesium bar to start fires before. It is great, relatively easy and quick, again as with most of these tasks it is about preparation and knowledge. If you get the sparks going and a small fire starts, you have to be ready with all the tender to keep the fire going or it will burn out in seconds. Knowing how to filter water and having some on hand can save your life. You can only live 3 days without water, so you won't have much time once anything goes wrong. You can do some remedial water filtering like pouring water through a cloth filter of any sort into a clear plastic bottle, then leaving it out in the sun for 8 hours. This will purify most water enough to be consumed. You can make learning these skills fun and exciting by camping in exotic places or even your own backyard. Just be sure to add some activities your family loves like singing by the campfire or making smores. You can add airsoft or bb guns or even real guns out while camping. As long as you are safe with firearms they can be extremely useful and even save your life.
