As it expanded its territory, Rome built an infrastructure of roads, bridges and aqueducts that the world had never seen. The Roman arch was the foundation for many structures, including bridges, due to its incredible strength. A bridge could be made with one arch or it could be made of several arches positioned side by side. There are instances where the Romans built one row of arches on top of another to create a tall bridge. Whatever design you choose, the basis is the construction of the Roman arch. Obviously, only experienced builders should take on this project, but a small version can be made as a model, if you are interested in the process of building a Roman bridge. Instructions as follows: Firstly, decide where the arch will sit on the land where you are building the bridge. Hammer four stakes into the ground where the arches will sit. Ensure the stakes are parallel and the exact width of the bridge being constructed. Model bridges could be 1-2 feet in width. Secondly, use the shovel to dig two parallel trenches at approximately 2 feet deep, that run from the arches to the ends of the bridge. Build the external walls of the bridge using the pre-cut stones. Sand and sand gravel should be used as fill between the stones. Use the pattern and build these walls to the height where the arch begins. Thirdly, cut the pieces of wood as per the Roman arch pattern using the ban saw. Construct two framed wooden arches with hammer and nails and fit between the external bridge walls. Hammer long pieces of wood between these wooden frames. Fourthly, begin to build the arches for the external walls by fitting the pre-cut arch stones up on each side of the wooden frame until the stones reach the top. The stones should sit flush on top of each other. Drop the keystone into the center at the top of each arch secure and complete. Fifthly, build the internal walls of the arch using the regular pre-cut stones. This will essentially join the two parallel arches. Sixthly, continue to build the external walls from the ground up between the arches and the supporting landscape using the pre-cut stones. Use sand and gravel as fill between the stones. Seventhly, as the external stone walls of the bridge are being built, the cavity or space between the external walls should be tightly packed with sand, gravel and rough stone. Continue in this manner until the height of the arches are surpassed. Follow the pattern for the exact measurements. Eighthly, pack down the sand, gravel and rough stone that sits in the cavity or space between the two external walls. The final step is to brick this area with pre-cut stone to create the surface of the bridge. The Roman bridge is now complete. Finally, let me have a short conclusion.
