Art is a form of self-expression. This is why a lot of artists use it as a way to show their feelings, emotions, ideas and beliefs. Different medium are used in art. Professionals, amateurs and hobbyists use various materials in creating their works. If you have a growing interest in art and you would like to try it yourself, the first thing you need to consider is what type of art to make. Are you into painting? Sculpture? Or sketching maybe? Once you have decided what type of art to work on, the next thing to consider is the materials to use. Depending on what you are doing, there are several products that you can use. For this example, we will focus on painting. There are so many things that you can use for painting. Some of them may even be available in your home. And even if you do not have these materials yet, there are lots of stores where you can purchase what you need. One of the things that you may find helpful is a sketchbook. This is where you can draw any ideas that come to mind. It is best to always bring it with you as you never know when inspiration might strike. You may find inspiration in something that you’ve seen outside and you want to sketch it immediately to capture the moment. You can then transfer it to a canvas once ready. Water colour is another popular material used in painting. Acrylic is another product, which is often used by professionals. This provides more flexibility than water colour as you can make the painting more vibrant in terms of colour. But whether you are using water colour or acrylic, it is very important to have a quality brush; something that will make every stroke accurate. These brushes come in different sizes. You may want to purchase varying sizes of brushes so you can work on the details of your work properly. Other materials that you could use are gouache, oils, water mixable oil, alkyds, oil sticks, soft pastel, oil pastel, water soluble pencils or crayons, encaustic and tempera. The quality of the materials you purchase has a huge effect on the outcome of your artwork. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to buy expensive products as a high price tag does not always equate to quality. There are great items that you can find at a reasonable price if you search around. One way to find them is through word of mouth. If you have friends, neighbours or relatives who are also into art, ask them for recommendations where to get your materials. Their suggestions would be very valuable as they are based on their experience. It is also important to choose art materials that are safe for you and the people around you. It pays to read labels. Check on the ingredients used and make sure that the items were approved for safety. Louise Carr is an art enthusiast. She writes about various tips related to art materials to use on her blog.
