Domestic violence against women is an issue that is usually talked about and reflected upon as an individual’s problem. For the most part, any discussion or opinion that is expressed or associated with this problem pertains to the victim and the abuser. Everything from why it happens, what is the root cause and how it physically and psychologically the victim is spoken about. This is absolutely natural and the most relevant aspect of dealing with the problem. What however is also a necessary aspect to explore is the effect that domestic violence has on the society too, in addition to what it does to the woman concerned. Domestic violence on against women is such a toxic problem that it engulfs and affects society on a number of layers. One of the most crucial components of society is family. There is no denying the fact that domestic violence has an adverse effect on the family structure. Kids who are exposed to violence when they are growing up, end with psychological problems that greatly hamper their natural development. They develop age-dependent negative effects and research has proven that those who have witnessed domestic violence when growing up are likely to indulge in it themselves as adults. From the point of view of society, this culminates into a negative pattern where domestic violence gets a boost, as opposed to getting reduced. Whether its violence against women India or anywhere else in the world, there is no denying the fact that the issue is complex and multi dimensional. When a woman suffers from psychological stress and damage as a result of domestic violence, it is the community as a whole too that is affected. Woman, whether socially or as part of the workforce are major contributors to the overall development and evolution of society. In that sense, for any one woman who is unable to do so, the social structure suffers and that is detrimental to its natural progression. While talking about domestic violence is one thing, the more important thing is to take action. Whether in the form of spreading awareness, showing support and more than anything raising ones’ voice whenever witnessing anything even remotely close to violence, each and every individual has to play their part. The thing to remember is, the deeper this evil is allowed to penetrate into the layers of society the harder it will be to control and eliminate. In order to safeguard and protect, it is first important to understand and realize the extent of the problem and then actively look for potential solutions. Domestic violence corrupts the moral, emotional as well as the psychological fabric of anything and everything it touches. It cannot be taken lightly or allowed to grow at any cost.
