Joining Kelm on the second team was outfielder Aubrey Bekendam ofHamilton. Bekendam, no stranger to all-section teams as she hasbeen twice chosen the section's most valuable player in basketballand earlier in the school year was named the volleyball MVP aswell. While softball may not even be her second-best sport, the athleticBekendam still excels more than most. The Brave, who is bound forthe Master's College in Santa Clarita to serve as the school'ssetter for the volleyball team, hit a team-high .432 and slugged.750. She also added five triples and had a .510 on-basepercentage.
The section's player of the year was once again Hawkins, who won itlast year after leading the state in strikeouts as a junior, a featshe repeated this season. The Anderson standout who is bound forthe University of Oregon dominated the Lions' all-star game,pitching four hitless innings and striking out nine. Hawkins was a productive hitter as well, setting a sectionsingle-season record with 20 doubles as she hit .551 with four homeruns and 46 RBIs as she led the Cubs to a successful defense of thesection title they won in 2011. The coach of the year was Colusa's Randy Watt.
The longtime coachwho is retiring guided the RedHawks to a share of the SacramentoValley League title and their first section title in softball whenthey took down top-seeded Mount Shasta 4-3 in 12 innings in theDivision V final.
