We have all heard and enjoyed a good number of riddles from our peers, teachers, and parents. We have enjoyed these riddles so much for such a long time because whether we solve them on our own or have to read the solution, the entire experience is mentally enlightening. But regardless of the reasoning behind the enjoyment, we enjoy them and we have for almost as long as language has existed. Riddles are fun for the whole family, can bond families, and can improve our brains capacity to think logically. Many studies performed by universities have shown that riddles have many positive effects on children and their brains. The University of Sussex performed an experiment that tested the relationship between children's understanding of riddles and how well they comprehend text. The results to these tests show that children that are more experienced with regards to riddles also show higher reading comprehension skills in general. Not only does the fact that children practice riddles correlate to their comprehension, but the difficulty of the riddles also corresponds to better reading comprehension. This research was performed by separating the kids into two groups: one that studied riddles and one that did not (control group). When the group that studied riddles was compared to those who did not, their reading comprehension increased markedly when compared to the control group. This research does not stand alone, there have been several studies performed with regards to children's intellectual performance and riddles. With this information, it would make sense that more riddles should be incorporated casually into school curriculum to improve children's reasoning and reading skills. These easy and fun interaction with children can show noticeable and important improvements in their school performance. Another aspect of riddles that have been studies is the improvements in creativity that can be achieved when children are encouraged to create their own riddles. A study performed at Stanford University showed that children's creativity is improved to some extent when they are encouraged to create puns and riddles of their own. When children have to create them, they must not only think about the solution, but they must also think about a creative way to arrive at that solution. In this way they are forced to think in several logical directions, rather than just a single one. These abilities translate over to other skills requiring a level of creativity and critical thinking. Kids are our legacy, and we are responsible for instilling good learning habits and mental tools that they can use to solve problems.
