Boots and Specsavers are the two major optical retailers; together they operate more than 1,200 optical branches across the UK. Vision Express and Optical Express are another two significant retailers, which have around 330 and 130 UK outlets, respectively. Within the supermarket sector, Tesco has more than 180 in-store opticians, while ASDA has nearly 100. The leading suppliers of ophthalmic products in the UK are multinational companies, including Essilor, Carl Zeiss, Bausch & Lomb, Johnson & Johnson, CooperVision and Alcon, all of which have well-established distribution networks for their products. The recent economic downturn and the recession that followed had a dampening effect on all sectors in the retail industry, including the market for ophthalmic goods and services. Key Note estimates that the total market (excluding laser eye surgery) grew by a modest 3.5% in 2012. The market is dominated by the ophthalmic goods sector, which accounted for 86.4% of the market’s total in 2012; this sector is in turn dominated by sales of spectacles. The average price of a pair of spectacles has fallen dramatically in recent years as a growing number of opticians are offering promotional deals — such as ‘buy one get one free’ offers — as well as broadening the choice of eye wear and range of prices. In the ophthalmic services sector, fees received for sight tests paid for both privately and by the NHS in 2012 were up by 13.4% on 2008. Over a quarter of the total income on tests is derived from private-paid sight tests. The laser eye surgery sector is probably the sector that has suffered the most as a result of the economic downturn. In early 2012, financially troubled Ultralase was put up for sale by its bank owners, the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Barclays. Ultralase blamed the economic downturn, which has deterred customers from undertaking expensive treatment. The laser eye surgery sector was estimated to have fallen in value by 20.8% since 2008. The UK economy is expected to remain subdued over the next few years; however, the future for ophthalmic goods and services may not be as bleak. Key Note believes that demand for ophthalmic goods and services will benefit from the UK’s increasingly ageing population, as well as new product development (NPD) in the corrective eyewear field. Against this background, Key Note forecasts a modest year-on-year growth of between 2.3% and 2.6% between 2013 and 2017.
