Readers' comments (8) Peter Dyson 8 June 2012 8:22 am Sir, The only way to fight any crime is by having some deterrent inplace, a deterrent strong enough to send a message to criminalsthat when they are caught the law will punish them and take awayany thoughts of doing it again, simply the government need tointroduce stiffer penalties, heavy fines, imprisonment, confiscation of assets, and if they are foreigners deportation forthem and all their family, never to be allowed back in the UK. It is a poorreflection on the society in which we live that such a bigproportion of victims of crime don't even bother to report thosecrimes, such is their lack of confidence in the ability of thepolice to apprehend the culprits. You can make the punishment as severe as you like(including ethnic cleansing as you want Peter) but if they knowtheir is precious little chance of suffering those punishments, itreally does't matter does it? More police investigating crimerather than prosecuting motorists I say.
Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment Peter Dyson 8 June 2012 3:05 pm To John Tuck, some victims don't bother to report crime because thePolice are demoralised at the light sentence the criminals get incourt, harsher sentences would deter them from doing the crime inthe first place, these criminals are not stealing a few eggs, or afew potatoes, it's big business stealing machinery to order andship abroad, we need harsher sentences or the government shouldgive the victim rights to protect themselves and their property. Report this comment john tuck 8 June 2012 8:10 pm To Peter Dyson The police are judged on their success rate in detecting criminalsand they are reluctant to put in the required effort to investigatedifficult to solve crimes. They may be demoralised but that is aconsequence of political pressure, not sentencing policy. Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment Peter Dyson 9 June 2012 9:40 am John, there should not be any political pressure put on the Police, when they joined the force they took an oath to defend law andorder without fear or favour, criminals when they are caught shouldbe given harsher sentences to deter them, the way the law is at themoment the criminals are having a field day, and need a hardmessage sending to them, after all we all want law and order.
Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment John Tuck 9 June 2012 10:29 am I absolutely agree with you Peter Dyson that there should not beany political pressure put on the Police, but it is an unfortunatefact of life that there is. Judgements on the performance of thosedelivering public services and their ability to meet targets, mayinitially deliver a wakeup call but human nature will inevitablyresult in people looking for ways to skew the figures. Schoolleague tables, hospital waiting times, police clear up rates forcrimes, none of them can be relied on because of this fiddling ofthe figures and politicians are to blame.
