The man with the most to gain during last night's (Sat., June 9,2012) Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley fight at the MGM GrandGarden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was unquestionably Bob Arum. Arum is the Top Rank promoter who handles both the men who steppedinto the ring last night. However, word around the water cooler isPacquiao may have been leaving Top Rank in 2013, which would meanArum would stand to lose a lot of money. Unless Bradley could emerge victorious and an immediate rematchcould take place. That fact alone has caused many in the media to question whether ornot last night's showdown was on the up-and-up. These are big moneyfights with millions of dollars on the line and with boxing'salready shoddy reputation, that was all the evidence needed toconvict Arum in the court of public opinion. His comments at the post-fight press conference (via ESPN ) would only make it worse. At first, Arum expressed outrage, even going so far as to sayBradley told him he thought Pacquiao won the fight. "I've never been as ashamed of the sport of boxing as I am tonight.Can you believe that? Unbelievable. I went over to Bradley beforethe decision and he said, `I tried hard but I couldn't beat theguy.' " It should be noted that Bradley denies ever saying such a thing andhis mannerisms in the ring after the bout don't suggest he believeshe lost. But the comment that has folks up in arms is what Arum would saylater. "I'll make a lot of money off the rematch, but this wasoutrageous." And there it is, folks. Arum's anger belies the fact that he'll beright back here later this year promoting the rematch, which couldvery well turn out to be Pacquiao's retirement fight, as his careerhas been winding down in favor of outside ventures. It's best to get it while the getting is still good, I suppose. Butwill we ever know if there was foul play here? Probably not. Thereisn't likely to be an investigation by the Nevada State AthleticCommission (NSAC), despite the demands for one, and viewers willlikely turn out in droves for the rematch in a few months.
