Cycle lights should be used all year round if you plan to ride after dark, however it is absolutely essential that they are used during the winter months when the mornings and evenings are darker than normal and the weather brings harsh conditions. Those dark and dreary days can be tackled with a powerful beam that guides your way and also helps other vehicles and cyclists to see you with ease. It can be hard to spot cyclists in the dark as they naturally blend into the surroundings. This is why it should be the cyclist's number one priority to be seen. With the use of reflective clothing and a good set of cycle lights, we can all make the roads a safer and more harmonious place. Staying Safe, Keeping Warm There are a number of things you can do to stay safe and visible during the winter months. You will need to take all the normal precautions such as wearing a helmet, taking a puncture repair kit and fitting front and rear cycle lights, but there are a number of other things you can do. Why not attach another light to your helmet so you can improve your vision and also increase your chance of being seen. You should also invest in some bright and reflective clothing as this will significantly help. There is a huge range of cycling clothing out there today and when you're shopping for your winter gear you will need to buy items that keep you warm too. As well as a well fitted jersey, jacket and pair of trousers, you may want to invest in some base layers, a pair of gloves, cycling socks and overshoes. These items will ensure you get the most out of your winter ride without being uncomfortable and cold. It isn't a difficult ride. The gradient is almost un-noticeable most of the time and there is always the thought that it will be down hill all the way back. Fortunately, the seven old station buildings are still there and four of these: Mapleton Lane, Tissington, Hartinton and Parsley Hay (what a lovely name for a station), have been opened as places where refreshments and food can be purchased. These were very welcome stoppage places, where we had a chance to regroup, catch our breath and have a cuppa and a natter. Enjoy your Winter Rides It may be cold and it may well be pitch black but who says you can't enjoy it? With the right clothing and cycle lights you will be warm and certainly visible so just embrace it! Take in the fresh air and take advantage that the roads are a little quieter. Choose a National Park and take the whole family for a winter ride, followed by a hearty pub meal. If you plan to ride on country roads just watch out for ice and be careful around sharp bends. As long as you take your time and ride cautiously, your ride shouldn't have to be a chore. If you're a keen cyclist there's no way you will want to stop when the weather takes a turn so invest in some cycle lights, wrap up warm, be safe and enjoy!
