The Second Independent Speaking Task

Education,Business
A Strategic Plan Hello again, Last time, we began our discussion on the Independent Speaking tasks. If you remember there are 2 of them and the first one is not scored. The second one, however is. While it’s important to do well in the first task, it’s even MORE important to do so in this second task. Let’s break the task down. First off, you are given a topic, which you have 15 seconds to prepare. That’s not a whole lot of time, but the good news is that you can use notes so make use of them. Next you have 45 seconds to speak, which can be too much time or too little time depending on your content. How you use up that 45 seconds is in your preparation and that is by writing down your points. Leave these points to 1 to 2 words and no more. Try to get the main points about the subject and not dwell on side issues. You will be expected to use examples and reasons to support your answer and you can note these down as well, but again, keep them short. Remember, you only have 15 seconds to prepare and that’s not a whole lot of time. Now, you should have 3 points to discuss. Three points are good because you will need to expand and explain these points through reasons and examples. You have 45 seconds to speak and 3 points will give you that time. Remember that you also have to include an introductory statement and a concluding statement as well as part of this task. The introductory statement will start with the topic. This should consist of 1 sentence and no more than two. In this statement you are going to state 2 things; first what the topic is and the second your view of this topic. After that, you will start talking about the points you wish to make along with reasons and examples to support your view. The final statement will be your concluding statement. This is a statement which you sum up your views by stating your opinion and the reasons why. Make it a quick one – two sentence statement. The key is that you want to use up all the 45 seconds. If you do not have much to say then you will not use this time up. If you have too much to say and you want to say it all, you’ll more than likely go past this time. That’s why it’s a good idea to stick with 3 points. Let’s 45 seconds down and it’s probably best to consider this task a verbal essay. Your approach should be the same as that of a written essay. Again, make your introductory statement. This will take only 5-10 seconds. The next part will be the body of your essay in which you will make your points and this you will spend the bulk of that 45 seconds. This should take you approximately 25-35 seconds. Finally, you will make your concluding statement and this should only take 5 seconds; 10 seconds at the most. For preparing for this task in general, please refer the earlier post which deals with speaking tips. Remember, content is the key. You want to use up the 45 seconds and by focusing on 3 points, you should easily do this. Do not fall short of the time by stopping early nor do not go over the limit. There is a clock on the screen to help you keep track of time so be mindful of your time. If you finish within 40 – 45 seconds then you have done well and this task will be a winner.

Well, that’s it for now. We’ll look address the other speaking tasks in later installments.
