Hello and welcome to the Bell IELTS blog. If you’re looking for somewhere to pick up a few tips on IELTS from a source you can trust, then look no further! We’ll start off with the basics and move on from there with updates every few weeks – so if you choose to follow the blog, you should be able to make some progress without a great deal of trouble (but of course you’ll need to decide for yourself how to take your studies further and how best to get the writing, speaking, listening and reading practice you’ll need). Right, let’s get started… There are lots of things you need to know how to do if you are going to be successful in IELTS but the first thing is to decide what level you need. As you may already know, you can’t fail IELTS (providing you turn up for the exam and write something, you’ll receive a score) but it is important to know what IELTS level you can reasonably expect to get with your level of English. Have a look on our website to see a table below showing how IELTS levels roughly translate into General English levels, the CEFR (Common European Framework) levels, and the Cambridge ESOL Exam qualifications. Of course, no one can guarantee that if you are a general English upper intermediate student then you’ll get a 6.5 in IELTS, but upper intermediate students should be capable linguistically of that level if they prepare seriously for the IELTS exam. Universities may require anything from a 5.5 to an 8.0 (although 6.0 – 6.5 is more common) so the first thing you should do is find out what level you need. If you are an intermediate student and you need a level 7.0 or 8.0, you should definitely consider spending more time on your general English before moving onto IELTS-specific study. I teach on Bell's 8-week IELTS Fast-track Exam Preparation course which is designed to help you achieve the IELTS score you need for university courses taught in English.
