Materials scientists at Rice University in Houston, Texas (US) have developed a rechargeablelithium-ion battery that can be painted on virtually any surface. The new fabrication technique would open the door to new design andintegration possibilities for storage devices. Could Rice sbreakthrough be a leap towards hybrid devices that one day wouldmarry paintable batteries with paintable photovoltaics? Paintable batteries have the capability of direct and seamlessintegration with objects. With the painting process, we have theflexibility to achieve batteries of any shape or size, saysNeelam Singh, a Rice graduate student and lead author of theresearch report Paintable Battery published in the journal Scientific Reports . In essence, the team at Rice's nanomaterials laboratory led by Pulickel M. Ajayan, PhD, the University s Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in EngineeringMaterials Science and Nanotechnology , deconstructed the technology of a traditional lithium-ion batteryand turned its component into five layers, spray-painted in theright sequence the two electrodes with their respective currentcollectors and electrolyte. The Rice team s work presents the concept of paintable batteriesas well as its integration with photovoltaic technologies. Weforesee that components of solar cells can be painted on top ofpaintable batteries to achieve a hybrid device for solar energycapture and storage on any surface or object, Singh says. Shepredicts that because this technique has the potential to convertalmost any outdoor surface to capture and store electricity, thetotal amount of solar energy harvested can be increasedtremendously. The technology developed by Rice could one day enable standalonehybrid devices for capturing and storing solar energy. In fact, intheir first lab experiment, Singh and her colleagues connected ninebatteries spray-painted on bathroom tiles and attached a small, commercially available silicon solar cell that converted power froma white laboratory light. When fully charged, the paint-onbatteries powered a set of light-emitting diodes that spelled out RICE for six hours; the batteries provided a steady 2.4 volts ( see photo ). Astoundingly, Singh reports that in the lab test the paintablebatteries ran through more than 60 charge cycles without anysignificant decay in the capacity. The type of substrate did notaffect the performance of the battery. They have used metals, glass, ceramics and flexible polymer sheets, as well as objects ofdifferent shapes, such as a beer stein. At the lab scale theperformance is satisfactory. And since spraying is already anindustrial process, the paintable battery concept can easily beimplemented in industries, Singh says, adding that scaled upcommercial fabrication would yield more uniform paint layers, whichwould greatly improve battery performance. For applications wherefast charging and discharging of the batteries is required, we canuse nanomaterials for electrode paint formulations. The paintsolvents can be replaced with more environment friendly solvents. The biggest challenge in developing this paintable battery was toachieve mechanical stability on various surfaces. While thenanotube and the cathode layers stuck well, the team realized that the mechanical stability depended on the adhesion properties ofthe polymer separator and that ionic conductivity of theelectrolyte was one of major factors that affect batteryperformance. Eventually, An adhesion promoter polymer was addedin the polymer separator paint to achieve adhesion of batteries onpractically any material, Singh reveals. Singh considers paintable batteries a paradigm changer: This willignite the research to improve the conversion efficiency of solarcells and formulating paints for solar cell components withenvironmentally friendly, low cost materials. Once we achievethese goals, we will be closer to the goal of bringing paintablebatteries to homes.
