The beer tasting is celebrated throughout the world in the form of Beer Festivals with much fervor. Apart from celebrating the fun filled days of unending entertainment, beer festivals take the entire experience to a whole new level. Not only you get to sample beers from different regions of the world, but you also come across antique beer steins which are prized and renowned for their craftsmanship and artistic ornamentation. For some, sipping through a normal beer mug is enough of a fantastic experience in such events, and for other beer lovers, collecting antique mugs, beautiful beer steins and tankards is a hobby. The Traditional beer steins or mugs can be found in gold, copper, silver, wood, glass or porcelain style. Many such mugs have been imported from Germany to the rest of the world. Production of fermented beer is a centuries old phenomenon and similarly, production of functional drinking vessels are an age old process. Earliest Steins After being created in the 16th century, steins design style underwent its first change during the Transition era of the 17th century. The Germans produced Steins with lids and the productions of over four thousand breweries in Bavaria only resulted in a greater demand for the Steins. This era saw the production of stoneware stein. European porcelain discovery in the 1700s led to the production of porcelain steins in the same century. This was, however, very expensive and only wealthy Germans of that time could afford porcelain or glass wedding beer stein. The Golden Age Post 1850s, many designs were influenced by the Renaissance and Classical periods. Therefore, stein from this era had extensive motifs from Renaissance allegory. In the later half of the 1800s glass production had become substantial and the same resulted in a mass production of glass steins. The sturdiness of the thick glasses enhanced the popularity of such steins. Mettlach in Germany produced most of the traditional steins with Renaissance Motifs and the same were exported to the rest of the world. Despite the popularity, stein making was ceased due to the world wars and production completely stopped The Modern World The Modern world, post 1920s saw the rise of many public museums and people wanted to see the artwork and craftsmanship of Stein making. The appreciation for the great artwork on steins resulted in collecting of them by public museums. Of late, limited edition Steins have been circulating in the market because of their popularity and appreciation of the people who recognize the value of beautiful artwork. Each stein has a history behind it and holding history so close to your hands is a spectacular feeling. Since, each Stein has carried the motifs inspired from one era or the other, it may be possible that a European king may have drank from one 400 years ago!
