Drowning Under All The Titanic PR---And Other Important Matters April 16, 2012 By Joe Rothstein Editor, EINNEWS.com It s time for a bit of mental spring cleaning, one of those dayswhen I clear some clutter out of my mind and off my chest. Staywith me as I vent on a number of unrelated topics. Let s start with the Titanic. I hated the movie. All I could thinkof on my way out of the theater was that 1,500 people died in thatdisaster and the movie made me watch them die one at a time. NowI m drowning under 1,500 stories of THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THETITANIC S SINKING!!! Today I heard Bob Edwards covering the Titanic on his weekend NPRradio show. Bob Edwards! One of my journalistic heroes. A millionimportant issues in the world that receive less attention than theydeserve and Bob Edwards joins the mob in obsessing about a 100 yearold disaster that s already been discussed iceberg to iceberg,cabin by cabin, from first class to steerage! And the National Geographic has a big exhibit about it at itsWashington, DC museum. And the movie is back giving us a chance towatch 1,500 people die, one at a time, all over again--in 3D!Sorry, folks, I just don t find poor little rich girl Kate Winsletcharming. The character she plays is extraordinarily dense. AndLeonardo DiCaprio as the poor but honest (and lucky) poker player,fabulous dancer, artist of nudes and heroic saver of lives? Excuseme. I prefer Batman. At least he doesn t pretend to be anythingother than a cartoon character. Okay, what s next? How about Hillary Rosen? Suddenly President Obama is on the ropeswith mothers who don t work outside the home because Hillary Rosenmade a stupid comment. Let s start this discussion with this question: Who is HillaryRosen? I have a vague memory that she was lobbying for therecording industry back when they were trying to keep music off theInternet. I Googled her and discovered she also lobbied for BP.Now, somehow, she s a Democratic Party Strategist. Really? For the Democratic Party itself? For any party-relatedcommittees? For any Democratic candidates? Nope. She just works forone of the thousands of consulting and lobbying firms in DC. Youcould walk into virtually any restaurant in Washington from noon to2 p.m. and hear the same kind of blather from the politicallywell-connected on just about any political topic you choose. Thisis news? Please. But here s News! The presidential campaign began this week! How doI know? I read it in all the best political columns by all the bestpolitical columnists. I d been under the impression that 30 or soRepublican debates and 15 months or so ago the political punditcommunity had pronounced the campaign under way. They also markedits start after Romney won Illinois. This week it started becauseRick Santorum dropped out of the race. Specifically, MITT ROMNEY GAVE HIS FIRST BIG SPEECH SINCE SANTORUMDROPPED OUT!!! And in that speech Romney revealed that PresidentObama, who has been a wuss on gun control, has a secret plan totake everyone s gun rights away if he wins a second term. Romneyactually has more credibility than most to know things about apolitician switching sides on important issues when the timing isconvenient. But that irony was missed in all the accounts I read. And, unfortunately, Romney s BIG SPEECH upstaged Newt Gingrich,who proposed that the UN declare it a human right for all thepeople on the planet to have guns---even people living in GreatBritain, France, Germany and all those other countries thatrestrict firearms and have gun death rates a fraction of ours. At the risk of crashing my email box, as usually happens when Iwrite about guns, I think some of the most clever business peoplein the world are the makers of Glock, Colt, Smith & Wesson and theother thousand or so manufacturers of small arms. Think of it. With efforts to control tobacco, the fight is with thetobacco companies. With efforts to bring down the cost ofprescription drugs, the fight is with the drug companies. Butwho s on the other side in gun control debates? Not Glock, Colt,Smith & Wesson or the others. It s the National Rifle Association. Somehow, the small arms industry has been able to build an NRA heatshield between itself and unreasonable hostiles who might want tokeep guns out of the hands of mental misfits, or off of schoolcampuses, or let locals vote on whether and how to control guns intheir communities. The companies making money from gun production are largelyinvisible from any debate over the ownership and use of theirproducts. It s brilliant. Now that I ve offended a range of readers from Titanic-philes toNRA supporters (a few of whom are members of my immediate family),I feel I can move on to other things. It is cleansing to vent aboutthose items that nag at you, no matter how trivial. There s more, of course. I m not a big fan of the movie Avatar,either.
