Finding college graduate entry-level jobs has lately become a hot topic. Changes to the economy in the last few years have made finding work harder for many people in general but particularly hard for those with newly minted degrees. While people may have more challenges than before to becoming employed, the situation is not hopeless. It does require more creativity than in previous decades. Be prepared The importance of being prepared cannot be overemphasized. A resume is important and some graduates may have a problem with this. Students that only have employment from things like fast food, retail or other positions need to pull the best skills from these jobs to post on a resume. While these positions may have no relationship to the degree, there are almost always skills gleaned from these jobs that employers like to see. Customer service, problem resolution and office skills are applicable to many different kinds of jobs. Some students will have no job history. If this is the case, pulling skills from volunteer positions can be useful. Many volunteer jobs require the same skills as paid employment. Search differently There are dozens of different job sites and job search engines in the market place. Some of these are very specific to some industries such as financial services, healthcare or government service. Using these targeted types can help in many instances but people may also want to look for search services that use the degree type as a guide for finding jobs. This can often give people a better focus as to options so that they do not waste time looking at jobs that are not a match for their educational backgrounds. These kinds save time but they may also put the applicant ahead of the pack in terms of finding appropriate positions. Often jobs are very limited in how many applications are accepted so being able to apply before the majority of other people is always a plus. Network Graduates do not have the advantages of networking that are available to people that have been in the workplace for a while. This does not mean that networking doesn’t work. It just means that graduates have to be a bit more resourceful in finding connections. Alumni associations can often be a good starting point. Talking to others in one’s chosen field is also a good way to put out feelers about jobs and find sometimes hidden resources for jobs.
