I know of some people who believe that a house should be totally minimalistic and if possible monochrome. This is all well and good in theory, or if you live alone, but in reality this look becomes boring as well as impossible to achieve when you have a family. I know of one man who had a white wood floor in his bedroom, white vinyl flooring in the kitchen and white wood floors in the lounge. Once he had children however all that changed and the white wood flooring no longer gleamed or even remained white! The truth is that white vinyl floor tiles look great when they are first installed but after a while they tend to look dull and off colour. Before you choose between vinyl floor tiles and vinyl wood flooring you really need to look in to the pros and cons of both finishes and also to the amount of traffic that your floor will be subjected to. You also need to follow instructions when you are cleaning and maintaining your vinyl tiles flooring. Some points to remember are; • Keep out dirt and chemicals with a doormat. A doormat helps keep out your vinyl floor’s two greatest enemies: dirt and chemicals. Tracked-in dirt means extra broom time. Grit acts like sandpaper, removing the finish from your floor. And even though you can’t see them, chemicals from asphalt can stick first to your shoes and then to the floor, causing it to yellow. • Use the right cleanser. If your no-wax vinyl needs cleaning, wash it with a cleaner made specifically for no-wax floors, following the directions on the container. If you have older vinyl that requires waxing, clean it with warm water and detergent. Dampen a mop or sponge with the mixture, and rub the floor just enough to loosen the dirt. Try not to rub off the wax because you’ll just have to reapply it. Rinse with clean, cool water otherwise you’ll leave a residue on the floor. • Rinse well to remove all soap. Soap may get your floor clean, but soap scum leaves a film that actually collects dirt. Until your floor needs a serious cleaning, stick to damp mopping with just water. When you do need to wash the floor, use two mops—one for washing and a second one just for rinsing. • Outfit your furniture and large appliances with protective “feet.” The weight of heavy items that occupy permanent places in your kitchen can dent vinyl flooring. Prevent these dents by fitting your furniture with floor protectors, which you can find at hardware stores and home-improvement centres. Forgo rolling casters as these too can damage the surface of your tile. Instead, consider fitting chairs with felt tips, which won’t harm your vinyl. Vinyl tiles flooring can look good for quite a long time if you look after them properly but you also need to choose the colour carefully. It has to be suitable for your lifestyle and with the king of wear and tear you expect.
