What is it about Indian weddings that makes a would-be bride’s parents roll their eyes heavenward, while her friends excitedly begin to plan the songs and dances for her sangeet, clothes for the mehndi custom while the groom begins to browse through honeymoon packages; not a bit worried about the hall or how his huge entourage will fit into it. That unfortunately remains the logistical headache of the blushing bride’s family while she gears up for what society touts as one of the biggest days in her life. She has her own battles to fight, right from a mind-boggling array of looks to choose from which means so many puzzling options in clothes, cosmetics, jewellery to juggling the guest list, designing the invites, making those endless rounds to tailors, shops, relatives and the most important of them all the salon & spa or the beauty parlour; booking way in advance the most efficient professional! And how do johnny-come-lately, the wedding planners fit into this picture; when everyone from tauji and countless chachas or uncles and buas and mausis have a significant role to play and which they play to perfection and with elan. With the spotlight on the girl and how she looks, hair and skincare are of utmost importance and all types of traditional or home remedies are sourced from various relatives and well-wishers who are more than happy to prescribe whatever little they know and share their precious secrets. Also doing the rounds would be umpteen manicurists and hair stylists, massagewaalis traipsing in and out between a seemingly endless round of dress rehearsals. So grinding turmeric, sandalwood mixing oils, measuring vinegar, downing teas, applying strawberry scrubs and banana-oatmeal facepacks are all compiled into a strict regimen with no lapses to be tolerated. Then comes the tricky part! The bride’s tear and temper tantrums at the drop of a hat. Understandably so, what with the poor dear being under constant scrutiny of “badam ka tel lagaya ki nahi? Blouse kyon theek karvaya nahi ab tak? Sandal toh matching nahi hai…” As the D-day approaches, the tension keeps mounting until it reaches an unbearable crescendo which is a mix of sleepless nights, strict diets which almost starve the poor girl(!) the restricted time with friends and exhausting shopping sprees which drain every ounce of energy, mindless crowds on the road or traffic jams that delay appointments with the hair dresser which in turn cause tardiness with the next person on the list, probably the blouse-maker. Worse, just a few days away, from taking the wedding vows; after having been through this punishing time-table, she discovers a prominent pimple or a full-fledged zit in full glory right under her nose or at a strategic angle on her cheek! Now what can beat this nightmare, further compounded with her mother and all the aunts in the family warning her not to tamper with it and leave it alone, while her sisters, friends and everyone from the younger generation urge her to destroy it, even beg her to let them prick it, themselves, and have the satisfaction of doing away with it; then plastering a lot of war-paint to conceal any remnants of a scar however faint it may be! Well, it’s not easy to cleverly conceal the butterflies-in-your-stomach with coy, dimpled smiles for an irritating crew of cameramen and stoically face life in a new setting, earnestly making a home away from home. Don’t let the stress get to you, whether you are part of the bride’s family or the groom’s. Call A K Clinics for consultations and advice from internationally acclaimed medical experts who will smoothen the way with their professional service. Hair weaving, laser therapy or mesotherapy – the right procedure will be recommended based on your needs. Group package can also be worked out.
