SCMS Cochin ranked No 1 Private B School in Kerala: Aiming High

Outlook rankings for management schools in the country are considered to be a benchmark and are taken seriously by the more reputed institutes. Needless to say, Dr. V. Raman Nair, Director, SCMS, is chuffed with the latest development. “We are definitely happy and excited with the rankings this year. But there’s a long way to go before we rest. Several other important initiatives are in the pipeline for the coming year as we do our best to scale greater heights.”

In fact, SCMS Cochin has already taken various steps to boost its credentials as a reputed B School in the country. Recently, it forged a collaboration with The Association of Business Schools, UK, (ABS, UK) the authoritative voice for all B-Schools of UK universities. This move has brought SCMS further recognition on the global scale, besides several benefits like sharing issues and practises with ABS. Moreover, it has given SCMS access to ABS research and Biz Ed Directory listings, which can be of great advantage to its students. The results are bound to show in the academic excellence that SCMS Cochin strives for. This is one area where the institute has scored well in the Outlook rankings. At 130.8, its score is higher than that of some of the institutes listed above it in overall rankings.

Faculty member Dr. Filomina P. George is particularly pleased with this score, as she says, “Academic excellence, in many ways, is the hallmark of an institute. It’s something we try to achieve at SCMS and these scores tell us that we are headed in the right direction. Of course, there’s a long way to go but we believe we can get to our goal of reaching much higher levels in the future.”

The institute has also done significantly well in other parameters involved in the survey, including Selection Process and Personality Development for students. By bagging 126.8 points out of 200 in the former and 115.6 out of 180 in Personality Development, SCMS Cochin has managed to boost its overall rank this year.

Placements are another important element of these rankings for B Schools and SCMS Cochin has scored fairly well on it. Alumni of SCMS are not only job seekers but job makers as well. Besides heading marquee profiles across domains, a number of them are running successful ventures of their own. One of them remarks- “Students have always benefited from the placements at the institute. In fact, when we enter the real corporate world we are accorded a lot of respect because of the institute we come from. Of course, SCMS as a brand has its own value.”

Not willing to rest on its laurels, SCMS Cochin has taken another initiative that can help its students with placements every year. It has become the 7th B School in the country to get accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), a global agency headquartered in Kansas City that is responsible for the accreditation of B Schools. It naturally brings more credibility to the institute. But above all, because many global industry leaders have a policy of hiring from ACBSP accredited management institutes, it gives students significantly better placement opportunities.

Being ranked as the No. 1 private B-school in Kerala in the recent Outlook-Drshti Survey is definitely a feather in the cap for SCMS Cochin School of Business. But going by the mission of the institute and the initiatives it has taken, it seems like there is a lot more to look forward to next year.
