Challenge coins are a great tradition in the military. These custom coins are a longstanding tradition that affects every branch of the military. The overarching purpose of the coins is that throughout the duration of your career (and even into retirement or contracting) you will earn these coins as a result of your exemplary service and conduct from different leaders and bosses. You collect the coins and leave them on display. Of course you must always carry one coin with you for your particular unit. The unit coin must be kept in a pocket at all times lest a commander or other higher ranking officer subjects you to a coin check. Uniforms have pockets where these coins can be stored and even workout shorts for each branch of the military have inconspicuous pockets sewn into the lining where the coins can be stored for unit physical training. Many enlisted take great pride in collecting these coins and displaying them in their home. Once you collect enough you can start investing in display units to house the coins. As you advance in your career your collection will likely expand. The coins are each designed differently. Commanders and Chiefs each design unique coins for their units and those who serve under them. Different colors and etchings are used by different leaders and units. Those who serve abroad for TDY’s may collect coins that represent their time abroad. These coins are often designed with images and quotes from the unit and the location. Those who served abroad in Japan may receive coins that have both the American flag and the Japanese flag. They may also have text from both Japanese and English languages. Some coins have 3D indentations while others are solid and covered with a glass texture to make them smooth on the surface. These coins can be created for special events such as awards ceremonies as well. The legend of the coins takes place during the Second World War. It was during this time that an American soldier had his unit coin with the logo and motto of his unit. He fell into enemy territory where he was captured by the French military who presumed him an enemy helping the Germans. It was only when a high ranking officer found his coin that he was saved because the officer knew the logo and the motto. This served as his only means of identification and saved his life. Robert D.
