Most athletes can testify to the pain-relieving, recovery-promotingeffects of massage. Now there's a scientific basis that supportsbooking a session with a massage therapist: On the cellular levelmassage reduces inflammation and promotes the growth of newmitochondria in skeletal muscle. The research, involving scientistsfrom the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and McMasterUniversity in Hamilton Ontario appears in the online edition of Science Translational Medicine. The study involved the genetic analysis of muscle biopsies takenfrom the quadriceps of eleven young males after they had exercisedto exhaustion on a stationary bicycle. One of their legs wasrandomly chosen to be massaged. Biopsies were taken from both legsprior to the exercise, immediately after 10 minutes of massagetreatment and after a 2.5 hour period of recovery. Buck Institute faculty Simon Melov, PhD, was responsible for thegenetic analysis of the tissue samples. "Our research showed thatmassage dampened the expression of inflammatory cytokines in themuscle cells and promoted biogenesis of mitochondria, which are theenergy-producing units in the cells," said Melov. He added that thepain reduction associated with massage may involve the samemechanism as those targeted by conventional anti-inflammatorydrugs. "There's general agreement that massage feels good, now wehave a scientific basis for the experience," said Melov. Study participants were recruited at McMaster University inHamilton, Ontario, Canada. Lead author Mark Tarnopolsky, MD, PhD,from the Department of Pediatrics and Medicine said the researchprovides much needed validation for a practice that is growing inpopularity. "The potential benefits of massage could be useful to abroad spectrum of individuals including the elderly, thosesuffering from musculoskeletal injuries and patients with chronicinflammatory disease," said Tarnopolsky. "This study providesevidence that manipulative therapies, such as massage, may bejustifiable in medical practice." About 18 million individuals undergo massage therapy annually inthe U.S., making it the fifth most widely used form ofcomplementary and alternative medicine. Despite several reportsthat long-term massage therapy reduces chronic pain and improvesrange of motion in clinical trials, the biological effects ofmassage on skeletal tissue have remained unclear.
