I've always had a strange fascination with antiquated arts. From my youth I had marveled at Pointillism, a painting technique popularized by Seurat in the latter 19th Century; Arnis, a Filipino stick-based martial art; and herbal medicinal remedies used across the globe from the early empires of China to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. When discussing what our ancient ancestors found entertaining or revolutionary or curative, it is all but impossible to not experience that feeling of wonder as we realize how our forefathers had so mastered the fields of art and science without the benefits of modern technology and knowledge. One of the most popular of these ancient arts is a therapeutic procedure aimed at improving one's Qi, or life force, by stimulating pressure points in the body. This stimulation is achieved by strategically puncturing the skin using needles. This procedure is called acupuncture, and from its beginnings in China millenia ago, it has become one of the safest and most effective treatments to an extensive spectrum of illnesses and conditions. Fibromyalgia, hypertension and various other discomforts, like migraines and post-operative dental pain, have been scientifically proven to be alleviated by acupuncture by various established medical institutions. Acupuncture users have increased significantly in recent years, with some studies showing a modest bump. This increase in users does not necessarily translate to an equal increase in practitioners. A large number of Americans have limited access to Acupuncturists. An even larger number had never had the opportunity to undergo the treatment at all due to a lack of accredited practitioners in their localities. The prime reason behind this is that we don't have enough people aware of the situation. Not many are pursuing this need and taking the first step by undergoing Acupuncture training. Requirements vary from state to state, but some prerequisites include an undergraduate degree (preferably from a related course, like Biology) and some level of certification to practice. Though the old methods of handing down olden family knowledge of the practice from generation to generation have been rendered outdated by modern educational techniques and curricula, the integrity of the practice have not been compromised. Centuries from now, people who turn to acupuncture for relief from pain and other conditions will still receive the expected alleviation that their ancestors did from Acupuncture. Look into pursuing a career in this field. Seek out one of many colleges and training centers that offer Acupuncture training. It will be a landmark first step towards a new direction in your professional life.
