If you work in the medical field you may have heard the term locum tenens. It is a Latin term that roughly translates to place holder. It is a commonly used term within the medical profession. A locum tenens takes the place of regular physicians when they are unable to be there or when a practice needs the extra staff. Despite a somewhat temporary position, locum tenens are still regulated, as a more formal doctor would be. Now while it’s not what you would traditionally imagine a doctor does in the medical field locum tenens positions do carry with them certain advantages. 1. Trying Out Different Locations Imagine you’re a young doctor fresh out of your residency and ready to try out new employment experiences. The thing about the medical field is that location matters. A big city hospital located in a multimillion person city is an entirely different world compared to a small town hospital. You are a product of where you trained and no matter if it it’s small clinics or the big city, that’s what you’re used to. However you may want to try something different. Locum tenens jobs allow you to work in different settings without assuming the full risks. Say you’re fresh out of a large health care center in a big city and want something different. You want to try out practicing in a small office or as a solo doctor locum tenens. This lets you get a feel for the day-to-day tasks in these different environments. Small practices are often the most difficult to make profitable. By comparison a large big city hospital has several layers of complexity and protocol. By using locum tenens jobs you can learn about the differing locations and figure out where you fit best. 2. Transitional Phases Locum tenens is a solution if your career is undergoing some changes. Moving and transferring over and converting certain certifications may take longer then you expect. You may be trying to find a city to settle down in and want to try it out for a while before committing to it. You may be waiting for a certain opening to become available and have a work gap you need filled. Or it could be something as simple as being on a sabbatical and you find yourself wanting to get back to work sooner. 3. Making Extra Money Everyone needs extra money at certain points in their life. Locum tenens work can be useful in filling financial gaps. Even if you’re working a well-paying medical job there is side work to be had. You may very well wish to be free from your student loans or have children’s education to pay for. Working during off times can be beneficial. However, allow yourself time to rest you don’t want to spread yourself thin. 4. Flexibility You may very well choose locum tenens as a career path. This does offer a unique approach that you can tailor to fit your goals. You may have a side business you want to grow that’s in the medical field. By doing locum tenens you stay active as a physician while still having time to work on and grow your business. Your calling may simple be to heal the sick. In that pursuit locum tenens work lets you focus solely on that and leave management to those more suited. You may very well need time off in blocks. Raising children, the desire to travel, volunteer work, and sports competition may be just some reasons for you to need periods of time away from work.
