Are you getting what you pay for? We often hear about incidents of consumers spending their hard earned money on what is being advertised as the latest trend only to be left out of pocket and disappointed. Company’s continually push the boundaries of what is ‘truthful and effective marketing’ or what gives credibility to the statement that many consumers believe in, that "alot of advertising is not transparent and can no longer be 100% trusted". Recent tests conducted on a product called Green Tea Hawaii have done little to help reinforce that this trend in advertising may be swinging in favor of consumers. The main message being portrayed to consumers in the advertising slogan of Green Tea Hawaii, is that each serve of their product is equal to as much as 45 cups of regular green tea and containing ‘over’ 450mg of antioxidants. However recent independent test results by Southern Cross University shows that each serve of Green Tea Hawaii only contains 326mg of antioxidants and only up to 6 cups of regular green tea per serve (comparison made against 1 regular cup of green tea antioxidants and polyphenols). That’s an extremely big difference between the advertised claims and the University test results. Evidence provided by Green Tea Hawaii to back their claims, further confirms that the Green Tea Hawaii product may not contain what the consumer believes they are paying for. A study provided titled ‘Bottled Tea Beverages May Contain Fewer Polyphenols Than Brewed Tea’ does little to strengthen the claims that their product is equal to 45 cups of regular tea. In fact quite the opposite. The study tends to lend support that they are comparing their products to bottled Ice Tea beverages and not regular green tea, which is widely recognized as being one of the world’s leading form of antioxidants. The study is based on bottled beverages and not regular used green tea, however it's advertising and packaging claims that each serve is equal to as much as 45 cups of ‘regular green tea’. A further study provided by Green Tea Hawaii titles, ‘Comparison of Antioxidant Potency of Commonly Consumed Polyphenol-Rich Beverages in the United States’, only uses ice tea (green, white & black tea) as its test subjects and is also based on Ready To Drink (RTD) beverages. So who is to blame, the companies who are continually pushing the boundaries in advertising by making statements that may not be exactly true in the way they are perceived by the consumers, or the governing bodies regulating the laws that define what is true and concise advertising? Attached are the results of polyphenolic testing as conducted by Southern Cross University. Note that 1 cup of regular green tea contains 54.0mg of polyphenols (antioxidants), while a serve of Green Tea Hawaii only contains 6 times this amount (not 45 times as claimed) at 326.3mg of polyphenols. - Science Daily (aug. 22, 2010)-Bottled Tea Beverage May Contain Fewer Polyphenols than Brewed Tea
