By Michael Levenson and Noah Bierman, Globe Staff Elizabeth Warren s allies in the Massachusetts Democratic Partytoday called on US Senator Scott Brown to disclose any fund-raisingties he may have to JPMorgan Chase, the Wall Street bank that isunder fire for a $2 billion trading loss. In a conference call with reporters, the party chairman, JohnWalsh, said Brown must reveal who sits on his New York CityFinance Committee, an entity that hosted an evening reception forBrown on March 12. Walsh also pointed to a Globe analysis of Brown s fund-raisingfigures that indicated that the Massachusetts Republican receivedmore itemized donations from New York City than from any other cityin America during the first three months of the year. Massachusetts families deserve to know if Scott Brown stands withthem or with Wall Street, Walsh said.
The demand comes as Warren tries to refocus her battle for Brown sSenate seat away from questions about her ethnic heritage andtoward more comfortable territory, of misconduct in the financialsector. On Sunday, Warren called on Jamie Dimon, the chief executive ofJPMorgan Chase, to resign from the board of directors of the NewYork Federal Reserve Bank, after Dimon acknowledged that we madea terrible, egregious mistake in dismissing warning signs thatpreceded the $2 billion loss. Brown s campaign held a conference call with reporters at the sametime as Walsh s call, to discuss the controversy surroundingWarren s claims of Native American heritage. Fielding questionsduring that call, Jim Barnett, Brown s campaign manager, saidBrown would not disclose the members of his New York FinanceCommittee. It is entirely typical for campaigns, including the Warrencampaign, I m sure, to establish folks to help them with theirfund-raising in the form of host committees, Barnett said.
Thisis entirely typical, and Scott Brown follows all the disclosurerules that are required. Barnett did not take a position on Warren s call for Dimon to stepdown from the New York Federal Reserve Board. I have not had that conversation with Senator Brown but, clearly,people need to be held accountable, he said. Barnett again called upon Warren to release personnel files fromher time as a professor at Harvard Law School and the University ofPennsylvania, something Brown had previously requested andsomething Warren has declined to do. Barnett cited a number of recent news stories, including therevelation that Penn had counted her as a minority in a diversityreport.
Harvard had also publicly counted Warren as a NativeAmerican. Warren had listed herself as a minority for nearly a decade, from1886 through 1995, in a prominent legal directory. But documentssuggest she did not claim minority status when applying to college,law school, or her job teaching law at the University of Texas,where she taught on and off from 1981 through 1991. It is impossible to believe that two different universitiesconcluded warren was a Native American without Warren herselfmaking that claim, Barnett said.
The question here is not aboutElizabeth Warren s credentials, so much as it is about ElizabethWarren s integrity and truthfulness and willingness to betransparent.
