Noonan syndrome can affect a person in various ways. It may cause unusual or distorted facial features, shortness of stature and heart defects. This disorder may also cause developmental delays. This disease occurs as a result of genetic mutation. Sometimes the mutation is spontaneous without involvement of inheritance. No specific treatment is there to cure this disorder. Growth hormone may be administered in some individuals to treat stunted growth. Symptoms:- 1. Facial features:-Facial features help for early diagnosis. They are different for different age groups. • Early infancy: In early infancy, i.e. when a child is younger than 1 month old, facial features like short neck, low set ears, down slanting eyes, deep groove and wide peaks in upper lip are evident. • Infancy: - In infancy, most of the features belong to nose and eyes. Eyes may become downward slanting with thickened lids. Nose becomes depressed at the top and may have wide base and bulbous tip. • Childhood:-The child may have an expressionless face. Other facial features may also get coarse or elongated. • Adolescence:-In adolescence, facial features become sharper and eyes become less prominent. Neck becomes elongated and webbed. • Adulthood:-In adulthood, skin may become wrinkled and transparent. 2. Heart diseases: - About 80% of persons having this disease are born with congenital heart disease. • Valve disorders:-Pulmonary valve stenosis or narrowing of pulmonary valve is the most heart problem associated with this disease. • Thickening of the heart muscle (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy):- This condition affects more than 20% individuals who are diagnosed with Noonan syndrome. • Other structural defects: - People having this disorder often have other structural defects like hole in the heart wall(ventricular septal defect) or ventricular septal defect. They may also develop pulmonary artery stenosis. 3. Growth issues: - A child may experience growth issues like difficulty feeding, poor weight gain delayed growth spurts. Bone development may also get delayed. 4. Learning disabilities: - For most of the individuals, intelligence doesn’t get affected much. Most of them are able to go to high school and college. However, special schools may be needed for some children. Intelligence isn't affected for most people with Noonan syndrome. However, there is an increased propensity of learning disabilities. 5. Eye conditions: - Abnormalities of eyes and eyelids is a common condition for people suffering from Noonan’s syndrome. The iris is often green or pale blue in color. Other problems like nearsightedness, astigmatism and nystagmus may also be experienced. 6. Bleeding:-Most of the individuals suffering from this disorder also have history of abnormal bleeding or bruising. 7. Lymphatic conditions: - Lymphatic system helps to clear way bodily fluids and fight infections. In this disorder, lymphatic system may get affected causing lymphedema i.e. excessive fluid saturation in hands and feet. 8. Genital and Kidney problems:- In individuals having this syndrome symptoms like late or delayed puberty, undergrowth of reproductive organs and infertility may occur.
