When it comes to buying flowers for an event or occasion it is sometimes hard to choose the right type and colour. Various colours and flowers have different meanings, and some are associated with varying emotions. Red of course means love and lust, while purples, oranges and hot pinks are related to romance, passion and sophistication. So for a first date a flower arrangement of orange roses is a great choice. The colour yellow signifies friendship and affection, as do freesias. Daisies and sunflowers represent energy and optimism so these flowers are great gifts for big celebrations such as graduations and birthdays. Bright blue and green flowers have the same connotations, should yellow not be your thing. Soft, pastel colours such as peaches, lilacs and creams show nurturing and warmth. These are colours that make us feel comforted and appreciated, and are good to give to a friend or family member in hospital or perhaps a bereaved loved one. Busy people and professionals who have hectic lives will always appreciate flowers. Misty greens and blues are great for this as they represent the sea and sky, signifying peace and tranquillity. Giving someone a bunch of bluebells is a lovely idea as they have been found to increase the production and release of melatonin in our bodies, helping us to sleep and relax. The have also been known to help slow down the production of the stress hormone and help people to breathe slower and deeper, removing any feelings of anxiety. Blue flowers also stimulate the thyroid gland to release a hormone that regulates metabolic rate. Research has also suggested that some flowers are actually good for our mind and body. For example, orange daisies strengthen our immune systems and lungs by warding off allergies. Studies have suggested that having flowers in and around the corporate work place can improve overall productivity by enhancing energy levels and expanding memory. Different flowers, however, mean lots of different things, snowdrops represent hope and orchids signify longevity and elegance. Peonies mean healing, pansies loving thoughts, and veronica flowers mean fidelity, so are good to give to a loved one on your wedding anniversary or even in a bridal bouquet. Bear in mind though that some flowers can represent quite horrible things. For example, lavender, although it makes our underwear drawers smell nice, signifies distrust and anemones represent fragility. So the next time you’re trying to pick some flowers remember what they represent, it shows a bit of extra thought went in and could mean the world to someone!
