Chilblains-cover up from the cold climate

Health
Chilblains or Pernio is a skin disease characterized by itching and appearance of red blisters on the skin. It may cause swelling of extremities like nose, ears, toes and fingers. This disease occurs as a result of inflammation of blood vessels that lie under the skin. Inflammation occurs when the skin is exposed to cold temperatures. The exact cause of this disease is unknown, yet it is believed that exposure to cold followed by re-warming causes blood vessels under the skin to expand more rapidly. Nearby blood vessels become unable to handle vessels dilation and increased blood flow. As a result, there is a bottleneck effect resulting into blood leakage into nearby tissues.

This condition usually resolves on its own and may not cause any permanent injury. However, if Chilblains does not disappear within one to three weeks, it is necessary to consult the physician. In some cases, it may become a seasonal disorder recurring annually.

Symptoms:-

1. Red spots on the hands and feet

2. Itching of skin

3. Blistering and swelling of skin

4. Burning sensation in skin

5. Formation of ulcers

6. Painful changes in skin colors

If left untreated, symptoms may get worse. If complications occur with skin blisters, a person is more likely to develop ulcers and infections. These infections are painful and can be life threatening.

Risk factors:-

1. Locations: - Surprisingly, people who live in dry and cold areas do not develop this disease because they take adequate preventive measures. People who live in areas with high humidity and low temperature are more prone to this disease.

2. Early winter:- This disease often occurs in early winter and disappears in spring.

3. Exposure to cold: - If an individual has prolonged exposure to cold, his skin is more likely to get affected if not covered properly. As a result, he becomes more susceptible to chilblains.

4. Sex: - Women are more susceptible to this disease than men.

5. Body weight: - Being underweight increases the risk of having this disease.

6. Poor blood circulation:-If a person has poor blood circulation, he becomes more sensitive to small changes in temperature thus making himself more susceptible to disease.

7. Raynaud’s phenomenon: - Raynaud’s phenomenon is another risk factor associated with this disease. It is more likely to cause sores and change color of skin.

Treatment:

• Corticosteroid creams: Topical Corticosteroid creams are used to relieve symptoms like swelling and itching.

• Medications: - Prescription medicines can be prescribed to treat this disorder. They include a drug called nifedipine which is used to lower blood pressure and open up blood vessels. Another medication called pentoxifylline is also prescribed to improve blood flow.

• Infection prevention: - If the skin is broken, it is more prone to infections. Medications and body lotions are prescribed to keep the skin clean and less prone to infections.
