When you read the names in the title of this article you clearly think of countries and nationalities and it is very likely that the first thing you say about them would not be that they are brands. But don’t you think a nation has to brand itself just like a company like Walmart, Facebook, Twitter or JCPenney? Why not? It is obvious that companies’ advertisements are more present in the media and that they constantly try to reach more and more people and to convince them of their products. However, if a country wants to attract visitors or investors it also needs to make sure that it is well known around the world. Moreover, the popularity has to be connected with as many positive things as possible which attract foreigners. Therefore it is important that the Nation Brand is constantly being worked on. If a company fails to attract tourists by offering and promoting attractive sights, great accommodation and outstanding service it will soon have less and less visitors as the word-of-mouth might be a really important way for a country to have more visitors but the perception which possible visitors get when looking at what the country offers on TV or the internet is much more important as this is quite often the first thing people do in order to find out about a new product or place. Naturally, a Nation Brand cannot fully be managed and controlled by a country. The Philippines, for example, have to deal with a unbelievable tragedy at the moment. A tragedy which was caused by nature and not by businesses or wrong government decision. This is something nobody can control and something that, of course, has a massive impact on people’s perception of a nation and the Nation Brand. In the case of the Philippines people will now think of a country which needs help urgently and which has to be supported by wealthier people and countries in order to overcame the disaster. Of course, as a result, nobody would think of the Philippines as a great travel location at the moment after this event. To sum it up, it is crucial that countries focus on have a good Nation Brand in order to attract foreigners. However, there are always things which can’t be controlled by any human and therefore affect the nation’s brand.
