Among the food-connoisseurs in the City of Joy, the love for Bengali cuisine is at par with any other category of gastronomic delicacies. With daily lifestyles becoming busier by the day, many families prefer lunching out at Bengali restaurants on Sundays, instead of taking the trouble of getting into kitchen-work. If you are a resident of South Kolkata, some of the top-class Bong eating joints you can visit are: i. Padmaparer Rannaghar – You can take a cab from your flat on EM bypass to Gariahat, to arrive at this pocket-friendly, authentic Bengali restaurant. Various preparations of the hilsa fish can be ordered here, with the ‘ilish paturi’ preparation winning rave reviews from all the regular patrons of the restaurant. The ‘mocha chingri’ (prawn with a vegetable) dish is delightfully savory as well. If you are not particularly fond of plain rice, you can opt for the delectable, aromatic ‘pulao’ instead. ii. Fish Fish – The love of Bengalis for fishes is a byword, and this nice little (and intriguingly named!) eating joint focuses exclusively on satisfying this craving. If you stay at a residential project near Narendrapur, you will not need too much time to reach Fish Fish, which is located at Swinhoe Street. The seafood soup would be just the perfect starter, and you can proceed to the fish platter, kebabs, pomfret fries and ‘chital’ preparations later. No chicken or mutton – yet immensely popular! iii. Sangu Valley – From any good residential project at South Kolkata, buses are regularly available to Bhawanipore – where the Sangu Valley restaurant is situated. An appetite-whetting aroma of fish fries and ‘kabiraji’s would welcome you, the moment you set foot inside this rather small and quite old eating joint. There are nice and cozy cabins available, where you can sit with your family, and munch on a variety of fast food, like fish balls and chicken fries. Over time, this place has lost a bit of its earlier sheen though. iv. Jhale Jhole Ambale – Near the Ramkrishna Mission building at Golpark, you will get this fine eating joint for lovers of yummy Bengali food. The ambiance and the efficient service of the waiters at Jhale Jhole Ambale deserve a special mention. The menu is extensive, and ranges from fried fishes to curries – with a lovely mix of spices and edible flavors. The restaurant remains open till 10PM, making it possible for you to grab a late dinner here, before returning to your residential project on bypass. v. Koshe Kosha – A place of absolute delight for meat-lovers. As is rather evident from the restaurant’s name, ‘kosha mangsho’ (mutton with thick gravy) is the top attraction of the place. After arriving at Koshe Kosha (at Ballygunge Gardens) from your residential project in South Kolkata, you can also order chicken dishes and/or prawn cutlets. Prawn biryani is available too. For dessert, do try out the ‘daab icecream’ or the ‘nalen gur icecream’ – they are both lip-smacking! vi. Tero Parbon – This place can be slightly expensive, but the taste of the dishes here would surely linger in your mouth. At the Tero Parbon restaurant at Hindustan Park, you can either go for the buffet meal, or order food from the a la carte menu. You can keep things simple by ordering ‘luchi’ (an eternal favorite of Bongs) and chicken/mutton curry. Alternatively, you can go for the sumptuous malai pomfret and/or daab-chingri as well. You can order food from Tero Parbon from your 2/3 BHK flat in South Kolkata as well – thanks to the excellent home delivery provisions that this restaurant offers. vii. Sholoana Bangali – If you live at a posh residential project near Garia, you can easily plan a family luncheon at the Sholoana Bangali restaurant. Located just off the Techno Tower at the bustling Prince Anwar Shah Road, this place offers popular Bengali preparations, like pulses with fish head (‘maachher matha diye moong dal’), fish with curd, ‘alu posto’ and ‘murgir jhal’, along with a whole lot more. You can order the tasty ‘aampora shorbot’ as the accompanying drink. Prices are not too high at Sholoana Bangali either. viii. Bhooter Raja Dilo Bor – If you overlook the unavailability of parking space near the restaurant and the rather cramped entrance, there is nothing else to complain about this well-known Bengali eating joint (at Jadavpur). The chicken curry in red paste served here is an absolute must-have, and you can order rice or paratha with it. Delicious chicken and mutton pulao can be ordered at this restaurant too. ix. 6 Ballygunge Place – To really pamper the digestive juices of yourself and your family-members, a visit to the grand 6 Ballygunge Place would be in order. Commuting to the place from your residential project on EM Bypass is a cinch, and the warm, courteous behavior of the staff here would delight you. An impressive range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes are served at this place, with the prawn malai curry, dhokar dalna and kosha mangsho probably being the tastiest. Sweet curd is generally served as dessert, along with a couple of juicy sweets. Kewpie’s, Bong Connection and Rajbarir Khawa are some other top-quality Bengali restaurants that you can consider visiting. For tasting different varieties of prawn and bhetki delicacies, you can plan a trip to Sare Chuattar, at Sarat Bose Road, as well. If you have all modern amenities with big complex in South Kolkata, getting transportation to any of the above places won’t be problematic. Good Bengali food wows even the sternest of critics – and these restaurants would delight you too!
