Capital Eurasia say Germany’s Volkswagen, Europe’s largest car maker, is set to unveil its first electric car for the US market. According to Hong Kong based Capital Eurasia, German automaker Volkswagen is set to throw its hat into the ring as the latest entrant on a growing list of major manufacturers that have ostensibly found a means by which to sell large enough numbers of electric cars to justify their colossal investment in research and development. The maker of the original “people’s car” has chosen next week’s Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil its e-Golf, an electric version of Europe’s best-selling Golf mid-range model. The e-Golf will be powered by a lithium-ion battery driving a 115bhp electric motor that can accelerate from rest to 60 miles per hour in 10.4 seconds and onto a top speed of 87 mph. The battery is said to be good for 70-90 miles on a single charge. A Capital Eurasia auto sector analyst said, “VW’s Golf is a tried, tested and extremely popular vehicle in Europe and the company has chosen wisely after learning that most potential electric-car customers tend to favor utility and everyday practicality over the ability of any superfluous styling that makes the vehicle stand out from the crowd.” Capital Eurasia expects the e-Golf to do well when it is launched late in 2014 because the Wolfsburg-based company has chosen not to rush an electric contender out preferring instead to ensure that the advanced driveline could deliver both in terms of performance and range. “They knew that public awareness of what electric cars could do was growing so rather than give in to the urge to join the pack, they chose to wait until they were confident the car would hold its own,” said the Capital Eurasia analyst.
