Federal officials have announced they intend to offer a Danburycompany a $3.5 million contract for radiation detection devicesthat will be used to help patrol the country's borders. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced it would offer the contract to Smiths Detection , which developed and manufactures the RadSeeker -- a handhelddevice that weighs less than five pounds and can identify more than40 radioactive isotopes. According to Homeland Security officials, the devices purchasedfrom the company will be used by Customs and Border Protection "to resolve nuclear threat alarms during secondary screening ofcargo containers at border crossings." Robert Bohn , Smiths Detection's vice president of sales, said this is thecompany's second contract from Homeland Security. In September, shortly after unveiling the new detection device, thecompany announced a $4.5 million contact awarded by the U.S.Department of Homeland Security's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office . That office worked in conjunction with Smiths Detection todevelop the RadSeeker. "We are very pleased with the progress we are making with theDomestic Nuclear Detection Office, and we are looking forward to acontinuation of that," Bohn said. "The progress we are making inthe civilian and military markets is also very promising." He added the RadSeeker's capability to locate and identifyradioactive isotopes is unmatched in the industry. With the RadSeeker, someone without much experience reading aspectrometer can identify a radioactive material in about 30seconds. "You are really at the forefront of the technology," Warren Stern , the director of the nuclear detection office, told companyofficials when he visited Smiths Detection. Stephen Bull , president of the Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce , said the RadSeeker is the latest example of the "kind ofcutting-edge technology that seems to be very prevalent" in thecity. He said it's very rewarding to know a Danbury company "isproviding products that are protecting Americans." Bohn said while the nuclear detection office is the "core customer"for the RadSeeker, "the rest of the market will look to (thatoffice) as the benchmark." "There is a lot of potential for other contracts, not only withinhomeland security but also with the Department of Defense ," Bohn said.
