On 6th July 2007, 13-year-old Kevin Jean-Rene joined his family for a day at Seaside Park, and lost his life in the murky water. The debate is still on whether to pay $200,000 to settle a wrongful death lawsuit the teenage drowning victim's family brought against Bridgeport and its parks department. George W. Ganim Jr.1,Personal injury lawyer in Bridgeport says about wrongful death, “Wrongful death is the taking of the life of an individual resulting from the willful or negligent act of another person. Wrongful death is perhaps the most devastating personal injury, as family members are left without a loved one. If a person is killed because of the wrongful conduct of another, the decedent’s heirs and other beneficiaries may file a wrongful death action against those responsible for their loved one’s death.” (Ref: Ganim Injury Lawyers, http://ganiminjurylawyers.com/wrongful-death-attorney-ct/) The boy, according to news reports from six years ago, was swimming at West Beach when he disappeared. He was pulled from the water several minutes later by two witnesses, but never regained consciousness. His mother, sued the city in early 2009, alleging that even though her son was swimming near a lifeguard chair, no lifeguard appeared until after the boy's body had been pulled to shore. Then-city spokesman Michael Giannotti said a dozen lifeguards were on duty during the incident. He said, "We feel the beach was fully staffed. We are still trying to piece what happened together, but right now, the city feels there were adequate lifeguards,". But one witness, who arrived on the scene after seeing the teen in the water screaming for help, claimed all of the lifeguards were gathered elsewhere on the beach. The $200,000 settlement is up for discussion by the council's Miscellaneous Matters Committee. If approved, it will then go to the full council for a vote.
