These are test procedures by fertility physicians to assess fertility, both generally and/or to find fertility treatments. They vary depending on sex. Below are some of the treatments; 1. Females Initial diagnosis by fertility doctors establishes the basic problem. It includes a review of one’s medical history and a physical exam. Ovulation Testing- After ovulation, the body goes through changes that fertility physicians measure to establish one’s fertility. These include rise in body temperature, rise in hormone progesterone, and increased follicle size prior to ovulation. Fallopian Tube Testing- After ovulation, an egg travels from the ovary to the uterus through one of the fallopian tubes. This test is done to make sure that none of the tubes is blocked. Other fertility testing procedures to look for other problems such as fibroids, polyps, scarring, and an abnormally shaped uterus include: Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) - During this x-ray procedure, a speculum is used to open the vagina then a catheter is used to inject liquid into the cervix so that it flows into the uterus. If the liquid comes out the ends of one or both of your tubes, then you can determine if one or both of the tubes are open. This is important especially for egg donations procedures. Laparoscopy- A surgical instrument (laparoscope) is inserted through a very small incision below the belly button. The fertility doctor then looks through it to see if one or both of the tubes are open. Adhesions and endometriosis are also checked. Hysteroscopy- The fertility doctor inspects the uterine cavity by endoscopy with access through the cervix. It allows for the diagnosis of intrauterine pathology and serves as a method for surgical intervention in fertility treatment. Sonohysterogram- Is an office procedure using ultrasound where a thin catheter is inserted through the opening of the cervix into the uterus, then sterile liquid is injected into the uterus. While the fluid is in the uterus, a vaginal ultrasound is used to obtain a good view of the uterine cavity and myometrium. Hormone Testing- Blood tests are carried out to reveal the hormone levels in the body. Fertility treatment is done by hormonal imbalance correction. Ovarian Reserve Tests-These blood tests measure hormone levels and give us an estimate of how many eggs one has in their body and how good they are. Where infertility results from poor egg quality or ovarian function, surgical removal of ovaries, or genetic issues, the use of egg donations becomes an excellent option when exploring fertility treatments. 2. Males Semen Analysis-It is the first assessment during male fertility testing. The fertility physician looks for; complete absence of sperm (azoospermia), low sperm count (oligospermia), abnormal sperm shape (teratozoospermia), problems with sperm movement (asthenozoospermia), and sperm that is immobile (necrozoospermia). Hormonal Levels- Hormones control sperm production. A simple fertility hormonal testing procedure involves measuring the levels of testosterone, FSH, and LH in the blood.
