Specialty Foods in the South of France

Travel & Tourism
The French certainly knows how to eat well, judging from the impressive array of foods you will find at a typical French restaurant menu. People with sophisticated gastronomic tastes are well-versed in the delicious meals and heavenly wines that originated in France. French food may look expensive for people who have less knowledge in gastronomy, but you will be surprised to learn that the common French citizen can eat superb food that are less expensive than most people think, great meals that you can find outside your fancy hotel avignon or hotel orange.

One can attribute it to the quality of fruits, vegetables, and livestock produced by the sun-drenched, fertile lands of the Mediterranean. The South of France is probably the most famous region in the country when it comes to great food. In order to enjoy French food well, you must get to know the specialties and gastronomic delights in the South of France.

Vegetables Galore

Those who love to eat healthy will surely love the vegetable-based dishes of the South. The Salade Nicoise, which is a native of Nice, is a vegetable lover's dream. It is made of lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, black olives, anchovies, and hard-boiled eggs. This is a must-try while you are staying in your hotel nice. If you love to eat bean and vegetable soups, you will find the Pistou as a hearty companion dish. It is a mixture of olive oil, garlic, and basil. Before Ratatouille became a title for a famous movie about an adorable rat, it is commonly known as the name of the dish that is one of the staples in the region. The dish is made of eggplants cooked in herbs, peppers, and olive oil.

Beautiful Wines

Bordeaux and Burgundy are the usual source of heavenly French wines, but the South also has great varieties, mostly rose wines. If you are craving for some aperitif, try the Pastis, which is made of anise. For a sweet, white wine to go with your favorite fish dishes, there's the Muscadet de Cassis. Although white wine is normally partnered with fish meals, you can try drinking with rose varieties instead. Try the Estandon St. Tropez, which is best served chilled. If you are eating lamb, you must drink a quality red with that. In Provence, your best bet is the Bandol, which is made of Mouvedre grapes.

Seafood Delight in Marseille

Eating out in Marseille is a heavenly experience, especially if you taste their bouillabaisse. The lighter variety is cooked with three types of fish and best served for lunch meals. The heavier variety has at least six types of fish on it and is better suited for dinner. The bouillabaisse is made by separating the broth, which is mixed with a spicy, fish-based sauce. The broth is served with bread or croutons. The fish itself is mixed with olive oil and with the same spicy sauce. The fish used in bouillabaisse are mostly ones that can be found locally. You can find fish types such as John Dory, spotted weaver, and European conger in a typical bouillabaisse serving.
