Did you know that the day of embryo transfer may become the turning point upon your chance of a successful IVF? Or did you know certain risk is involved with the blastocyst transfer, but there are also some advantages you should know about? Embryo transfer is the final step of an IVF treatment. Number of couples dream to reach this stage and to have embryos that developed and are suitable for satisfying transfer. Traditionally the embryos were transferred after 2 or 3 days of egg retrieval procedure. Blastocyst transfer is common in IVF these days. On the fifth day after egg retrieval and fertilization, the embryos would have reached the blastocyst stage, the cell division stage in which embryo has hatched from the zona pellucida or shell. At this stage the embryos itself ready to implant onto the uterine lining. Studies show that blastocyst embryo transfers are more likely to result in pregnancy, but at the same time, it also has some disadvantages. Advantage of Blastocyst Transfer Even though embryo transferred can be done on the third day after fertilization, a blastocyst transfer has many obvious benefits: • It makes it easy to find out the healthy embryos from the abnormal ones without expensive screening procedure. • At this stage embryos don’t have abnormal chromosomes numbers that eventually miscarried. • Waiting for embryos to reach the blastocyst stage reduces the number of abnormal embryos and leaving you with ones that are most likely to develop. • At this point the embryo has already hatched out of its shell and gives an improved implantation rate. • As embryos at blastocyst stage has 50-50 implantation chance, you just need to have one or two blastocysts transferred and rest you can store as back up if this cycle fails. • Unused or spare blastocyst embryos may be cryopreserved until they are needed in the future. Risks of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Blastocyst Transfer Although embryo transfer at blastocyst stage increases your chances of conceiving, it also increases the risk of multiple births. According to the studies, the chance of multiple births is more with the blastocyst transfer in comparison to 3 day fertilized embryos. However you can always choose to have a single embryo transferred but remember there is a 50% chance that it will not implant. On the other side, this procedure works under the assumption that several embryos will survive for five days. The fact is that as many as half embryos might die out. In fact for some women, none of a single embryo was able to make reach blastocyst stage and results in cycle cancellation. However in some cases, blastocyst cannot survive the thawing process as 3rd day embryo do. It means you might end up losing most or all of the embryos in the process. Confused? Should you get a blastocyst transfer? There are several factors that can decide whether the procedure is for you. If you are younger than 35 years and have healthy embryos, might be it work for you. As per the research there is a 63% chance of live birth with women younger than 35 had single blastocyst transferred compared to those who had two blastocysts transferred. In addition you might also benefit if you had no success with day 3 embryo transfer. Finally if you want to avoid the multiple pregnancy complications, it is recommended to go with single blastocyst transfer.
