The Benz Corporation did not always manufacture the Mercedes Sprinter. Prior to 2009, Dodge manufactured that model of vehicle. The switch came when Chrysler split with its parent company Daimler. Following that split, Chrysler declared bankruptcy. Daimler decided to stop manufacturing Dodge branded vans and instead opted to sell the Mercedes Sprinter instead. This was a somewhat unusual move for Daimler. Although they have marketed many vehicles in Europe with the Benz brand, they have not traditionally put that brand onto vehicles sold in the United States. Traditionally, they've used the subsidiaries Orion and Freightliner for those vehicles. Most of these vehicles are sold to commercial users. They have many advantages when used by private businesses, as they boast a very high cargo area, good gas mileage, and superb reliability. When these vans were sold under Dodge, there was a large network of over 120 dealers that were equipped to sell the vans. When the brand switched, this left some dealers uneasy, since it was unusual to sell commercial vehicles along side luxury passenger options. These issues have been addressed as the new brand has entered into the market. Many dealers now segregate the vans from their traditional lots so that individuals aren't turned off by the discrepancy between the vehicles. Currently, most vans are sold to expediters in the United States. An expediter is similar to a truck driver, but instead of going very long distances with very large cargo holds, as would be the case for an 18-wheeler, expediters take smaller loads. This allows for precise deadlines to be met when working on construction sites. The maneuverability of the Mercedes Sprinter ensures that drivers can get from place to place quickly and efficiently. These vans are used for much more than taking loads of cargo from place to place, however. The Hong Kong police use vans such as these as security vehicles. In Western Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, and New Zealand, the vans are used as ambulances. The National Health Service in the United Kingdom has actually named the 515 CDI model as the standard ambulance in Great Britain. Rolling out in 2014, the van is going to receive a refreshing new look. The grille will now display the Mercedes-Benz signature design, including 3 slats. The vans will now also include a 2-Stage turbo diesel engine, making the vans much more fuel-efficient. There will also be new technologies in the van to upgrade the driver's experience of driving the car.
