Transitioning into nursing homes is hard for the elderly who have been independent all their lives. Fear or resentment may arise and cause them to lash out. Some feel as if their family has abandoned them. People their age will be everywhere, and there is bound to be at least one fellow resident with something in common. Exercise will also keep their spirits up. When you visit, write down a list of events that are being hosted for the next week that has a combination of their interests. The family member may be grateful that you are trying to help them feel more comfortable. Pictures and belongings should be strategically placed when decorating their room. This is their new home and it should look as such. You can get them involved as much as possible when setting up the room. Sound excited and happy to be there. This is a new venture and should be treated as such. Although choosing nursing homes was hard, you shouldn't be upset or feel guilty. Be confident in your choice and try to help them understand this will be good for their health and mind. Although these little reminders can help, elderly family members will sometimes still harbor negative feelings. Always keep trying and do not give up. Continue visiting and planning family dinners.
