Most cooling systems are made of two parts, the condenser, usually on the outside of the home, and the evaporator, located on the furnace unit. The average central air conditioning system is connected to the home's distribution system, so the motor, blower, and all the needed ductwork are all part of the same system as the heating unit. If you decide that you want to attempt to perform your own ac repair, there are many things you need to do, after you turn off the system. The first thing you can do when you perform your own ac repair is to clean the evaporator. If the interior of the system is not visible, do not attempt to open it. If it is, however, you can remove the insulation and screws from the plate behind it. Clean the underside with a stiff brush, being careful not to damage the pipes. You can then clean the tray that carries away the condensation from the unit with bleach, making sure that fungus will not grow. Now you need to replace the evaporator, the plate, and the insulation. Turn on the unit and check for leaks, which can be sealed with duct tape. Once you have checked the evaporator, you need to check the condenser. Because it is outside, it gets dirty easily. Inside the unit, there is a fan that blows air across the condenser coils, which must be cleaned on the side of the intake, so you will need to know which side that is before you turn off the blower. You will first need to remove any greenery that has grown up around it, then use commercial coil cleaner to clean the condenser itself, letting it then dry completely. Next, you need to clean the dirt from the fins with a brush, without bending them. Do not use a garden hose as dirt can build up between the fins and get stuck. Make sure that the concrete slab beneath the condenser is level. If not, use a pry bar to lift it and insert rocks under it to level it. If those two fixes don't work to cool your home, the problem could be from the refrigerant. Most older systems have Freon and there may not be enough in the system to make it work properly. You can have a professional test it for you and recharge the system. You can repair this yourself by examining the lines, making sure that there is no wear and tear, causing a leak. You will need to replace any that are damaged by following the instructions that are in your manual. If you know what you are doing, it is possible to save money by doing the ac repair work yourself. However, if you do not feel comfortable with this work, call a professional. This may cost more in the short run, but will save you some in the long term.
