Eat more fiber. You've probably heard it before. But do you know why fiber is so good for your health? Dietary fiber, which is found mainly in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legume, is probably best known for its ability to prevent or relieve constipation. But foods containing fiber can provide other health benefits as well, such as helping to maintain a healthy weight and lowering your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Finding the right food to eat is not that hard with a little bit of research and don’t be afraid that it is only going to be weird-tasting things like in most diets, since fiber is found even in the most tasty of food. What exactly is dietary fiber though? Dietary fiber, also known as roughage or bulk, includes all parts of plant foods that your body can't digest or absorb. Unlike other food components, such as fats, proteins or carbohydrates which your body breaks down and absorbs, fiber isn't digested by your body. Instead, it just passes through your body without being absorbed or dissolved by anything. Most plant-based foods, such as oatmeal and beans, contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. However, the amount of each type varies in different plant foods. To receive the best of both worlds and have a healthy diet though you should eat a wide variety for fiber-wealthy food and not just a certain kind. How is that any good to you though? Well, first of all, dietary fiber will improve your digesting and your bowel movement in general. That happens because dietary fiber softens your stool and thus makes it easier and healthier in every way to have bowel movements. It also reduces the chance of having hemorrhoids. Other than that, it decreases your cholesterol levels and helps you also control your sugar levels at normal numbers. For example people with diabetes who have to be careful of their sugar levels usually have lots of dietary fiber in their daily diet. The most appealing healthy fact of dietary fiber though is that it helps you achieve a stable and healthy weight. The last one happens because dietary fiber usually requires more chewing to swallow so it gives your body more time to realize that you are no longer hungry and thus you won’t overeat anymore. So don’t hesitate any longer, make sure you do a little bit of research next time you buy your groceries and do your daily shopping routine to add some dietary fiber to your daily diet. It will only make you feel better! To summarize, dietary fiber should be a must for everyone and having said that, here are some numbers to keep in mind!
