The limousine was first created in 1902. Its name comes from the French region Limousin, as the covered partitioned compartment resembled the hooded cloaks worn by the shepherds there. The characteristic feature of a limo is it's partition, separating passengers from the chauffeur, or professional driver. The first stretch model was built in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1928 to transport "big band" leaders and their instruments. In the United States, most limousines are owned by the government, however private companies own and operate models as well. As the most expensive form of ground transportation on the market, the limo is associated with affluence. Hence, many will employ the service of a limousine company for special occasions or to "make an entrance." The market for this luxury service was valued at $4 billion in the year 2012. In movies, famous people and celebrities often travel solely by limousine. In Pretty Woman, Richard Gere's character Edward Lewis is a wealthy businessman. In the last scene, Edward Lewis appears in a white stretch limo, standing up, out of the sun roof, shouting and waving. The scene is only punctuated by his romantic vehicle, the modern white stallion. In the Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway plays a young, quirky girl who discovers that she's royalty. Along with a new look, new wardrobe, and Joe! Joe, played by Hector Elizondo, drives young Princess Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway) anywhere and everywhere in her own private chariot, a black limousine. Romantic comedies aren't the only films to feature fancy transportation. In action films, mob bosses often travel in style. Their long, black vehicles not only slink like eels in the night, but they demand a certain level of respect and fear. In this instance, the vehicle definitely reflects its cloaked namesake. It is in this way, that the chauffeured auto not only represents wealth, but also power. You too can hire a limo for whatever reason you choose. Most frequently, this level of car service is acquired for weddings, proms, funerals, reunions, and other major engagements. The standard color for these vehicles is black or white, but outside this dichotomy, you can also hire bright pink limousines, or other non-traditional colors. In over 100 years, the body style has also changed. Modern limousines come in various makes and models. One of the most popular models is the Hummer. Again, because this model is both massive and expensive, the transportation reflects power and wealth. There are also Lincoln, sedans, busses, and convertibles. Make your event special with a limo!
