With a deep, undercut cavity behind the thin face and the ThruSlot cutting entirely through the clubhead, TaylorMade believe the Taylormade SLDR irons create even more flex and speed at impact. The SLDR iron’s classically shaped and sized clubhead has universal visual appeal. It incorporates our new SpeedPocket with ThruSlot Technology, which produces fast ball speed and high launch across the face for distance and consistency, while also promoting soft feel and sound. On the surface, the SLDR irons may look like game improvement clubs, but TaylorMade have given the irons a modern, yet traditional shape to appeal to mid and low handicappers as well. The thin sole and slim topline give the SLDR irons better-player playability and looks. Whilst it may appear to be a replacement for the recent TaylorMade SpeedBlade irons, it will sit just below SpeedBlade in the handicap scale. A close comparison of the specs shows that the SLDR irons offer less offset, weaker lofts, less bounce and are slightly shorter in length, making them more appealing to mid and low handicap players. On the other hand the Speedblade iron was bionic by comparison. Using the same shaft I got 6 yards more carry on a 7-iron thanks to 3mph more ball speed and a higher smash factor. Yes, they have a 1.5° stronger loft, look chunkier and have a larger offset but boy, were they easy to hit. In fact, whilst they are most certainly a cavity-back iron designed for distance and forgiveness, the SLDR irons will actually play closer to the TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB Irons 2014 launched earlier this year. They are exactly the same in length, slightly stronger in lofts with a touch more offset and surprisingly, even less bounce. The SLDR iron is a classic example of this thanks to the new Speed Pocket that uses ThruSlot technology to create a gap that goes right through the clubhead and is filled with a soft polymer in the 4 to 7 irons. This does make the SLDR very forgiving and pretty light too, even if it sounds a little hollower than the CB irons at impact.
