Taking a road trip with children can be quite a memorable experience. The memories you make will depend on your attitude and planning. While your time together is great for conversations and sharing family stories, there is a chance for chaos if you don't properly plan. These vacation tips will help your family have an enjoyable road trip experience. Infants and Toddlers How does your little one prefer traveling? If you know that your baby will be happy snoozing the night away during the drive, you can travel during the later hours. On the other hand, you may choose to travel in the early morning hours before your child is ready for his or her nap. Work with your child's schedule. Plan to drive during the time that your tot naps and stop when it's time for a meal. It's unlikely that your four year old will be ready to visit the children's museum if it's in the middle of his or her naptime. Prepare yourself. Keep items that you and your child need close at hand. It can be helpful to have paper towels, diapers, and wet wipes close by. Dress your little one for the drive. Put your child in his or her most comfortable outfit. Let them wear the frilly, dressier outfits once you arrive at your destination. Children Plan a picnic. When driving for extended periods, it is helpful to stop every few hours for a snack and a restroom break. Pack a lunch and enjoy that along with a fun family game at a park on your vacation route. Charge the electronics. If your children will be bringing any of their high-tech items, make sure they are fully charged before leaving for the trip. If any items require batteries, bring extra. Change up the seating. After being together for a while, you may hear complaints from your children. You can help manage meltdowns by moving the kids around. If there is more than one adult, have one sit in the back to give the children some additional quality time. Try to arrive by late afternoon. Being on the road can be tiring, not only for you, but for your children, too. Plan to arrive before dinnertime so everyone can get a nice break. Pre-Teens and Teenagers Share music. Many older children enjoy music. Ask them to share some of their favorite songs that other members of the family may like. Play their tunes on the car's stereo or bring a portable speaker. Let teens help with the planning. While you are on the road, give your teen a guidebook or share travel apps that pertain to your vacation. Have them pick restaurants along your route and a few activities they would like to partake in. Listen. While traveling with older children, you may notice that they talk more. If you take the time to really listen, it may be a great opportunity to bond and learn more about them. Your vacation should go smoothly with these fun and helpful tips. Looking to visit Michigan?
