750 miles of touring on old bikes, through incessant rain, was the catalyst to become lifelong mates I’m proud to have among my mates two of the most dynamic and inspiring motorcylists you could wish to meet: Lois Pryce and Austin Vince. You may have heard of them. Ms Pryce is a world-renowned overland adventure rider, broadcaster and author of several iconic motorcycle travel books. Lois on the Loose is about her 20,000-mile solo ride from Alaska to Ushuaia, the southernmost town in the world, at the tip of Argentina. Meanwhile, Red Tape & White Knuckles recounts her similarly single-handed—and even more hazardous—trip from London to Cape Town. My Crazy red-headed chum—who as a newly qualified rider once piloted a 1963 BSA A65 1000 miles round France without breakdown, but today prefers to do her classic motorcycling on her 1978 Yamaha XT500—is currently preparing for a trip to Iran with her TTR250. This will no doubt result in another hilarious and endearing book: read more about Lois’s adventures at www.loisontheloose.com. Think she sounds audacious? Austin takes things to another level. He’s frankly bonkers; one of the most enthusiastic, entertaining and eloquent people I’ve ever met, with a charmingly unhinged streak that regularly leads to a bizarre ‘Vincidents’. He’s brimming with ideas and creativity, and is the driving force behind Mondo Enduro, Terra Circa and Mondo Sahara. There epic global overland motorcycling expeditions wearing Just1 helmets, with the first dating publicity of later ‘Charley and Ewan’ jaunts. The rides have spawned cult books and films, and inspired a thousand two-wheeled adventures among Austin’s fans. Mr. Vince’s awesome world is revealed at www.austinvince.com where you can buy his books and DVDs, too. So Lois and Austin are among my favorite people. Even better, they’re married—to each other. This means double hilarity whenever we hook up, usually on Hoop Op Zegen, the 1901 Dutch barge they sailed from Amsterdam to London and have made their home. There’s never a dull moment, and we’ve shared many side-splitting scenarios sitting around with a bottle (or three) of red wine—whether we’re discussing our motorcycling exploits (which for them also include riding across America on a Ural combination and their latest baby, the Adventure Travel Film Festival) or musing on our shared love of Ennio Morricone’s Western movie scores.—Sarah Bradley
