MOSCOW, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- There is no reason for NATO to become involved in any potential conflicts in the Arctic, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Tuesday. "Some persons in some countries, of course, raise that topic. As a rule, they are those who put an eye on what does not belong to them," Lavrov told reporters after meeting with Icelandic Foreign Minister Ossur Skarphedinsson. Lavrov reiterated that Russia also saw no reason to expect conflicts in the Arctic region. He added that decisions concerning the Arctic have been made by eight members of the Arctic Council, a high-level inter-governmental organization which includes Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States. "We see no idea of military actions in the Arctic. There is a consensus among the Arctic Council members that all problems which might arise in the region must be settled within the framework of the council and on the base of the UN conventions," he said.
